TDL Archived: The 2nd Rnd Pick Yankee Swap

Levert and Powell goes to Charlotte--Charlotte clears 31 million for next year
Hardaway goes to Cleveland-  Cleveland gets their shooter
Dallas gets Hayward-  This balances out dallas roster a tad if Hayward can stay healthy.  You will probably need to monitor his minutes heavily.  25 minutes a night to start.

Dallas could either go with that roster as it,  or maybe roll the dice more and trade Bullock to the Knicks for the lottery ticket Reddish and a young asset in Sims.

Unfortunately, Hayward's staying healthy is like asking McGee to be mobile.

Huh?  Did you really just compare Powell to Williams?  I love what Powell brings to the game, but being able to switch on to smaller players and defend the perimeter is not one of them.  Maxi is the closest we have.

I am officially worried about Christian Wood's future in Dallas.

Seriously? That’s his premier skill. The reason we keep trying to replace him with other centers and then trashing them to play him.

I’m really worried about watching him get targeted on the perimeter or pick and roll every single defensive possession he’s on the court come playoffs. If they can get something for him, they should.
Pessimism doesn’t make you smart, just pessimistic.

Timelord makes Boston a different team when he's out there rim running and blocking shots. They are dismantling the Nets as we speak.

I'm with Roddy B here.  If KP was on a reasonable contract, he'd still be in Dallas.  When you make that much money everyone expects huge production.

Extending can create a 6 month no-trade barrier, unless the numbers and years are limited.

With Wood, the limit they could add would be about 2 years, $30.8M total -- which I don't see as big enough to entice Wood to sign it.

The practical ramification is that if you trade Wood, he will be a FA in the summer, which has the potential to limit what you can get for him.

I’m watching that game right now too.  Man he is underutilized.  He does nothing but stand in the corner.

Speaking of…there is some thought of Indy wanting to deal for Collins to pair with Turner.  If Indy is interested in that, then why not the Wood Experience.  Indy has three first rounders.  It would probably be difficult to add three youngsters.  Maybe it is as simple as Bitadze/First for Wood and Dallas gets a $9.6mm TPE (to expire worthless a year from now).  Indy has other cheap bodies they can add to the deal, but the more talent that gets added the less likely we get that pick.  The more salary that gets added, the smaller the TPE.  Without adding anyone else besides Bitadze, the salary over the LT would drop to $7.1mm.

Cuban will get blistered for trading a 20/10 guy to save money blah blah blah (time will tell if there really is a better deal out there).  But, Mavs PR could at least attempt to spin that we got our pick back, a TPE to be used to acquire additional talent and turned four guys who are mostly out of the league into a young center prospect who was taken 18th a few years ago.  I joke about the TPE not being used, but it feels like it could come in handy.  There are some younger guys who might be brought in with little or no outgoing salary who might be useful.  Thybulle?  Reddish?  Naz?  Or, maybe it gets us some Maxi insurance.  It isn’t inspiring…I get that.  But despite the conversation with Omahen the other day, I still struggle to see a really good trade package coming our way for Wood before the TDL.

ATL's use of JC has been criminal since Trae showed up. He has so much more to offer.

If the Mavs get a 1st back for Wood I am totally fine with that. Letting him walk for nothing? I riot.

Collins is a hot potato. If you can use Atlanta's interest in getting rid of him, and his low value, as leverage to dump Bertans and/or THJ (BTW, those two together don't work for Collins, but THJ and Frank, or Bertans and McGee - yes, please - do work), then that's a golden opportunity. I certainly wouldn't tip them with a first in either of those deals, but a second or two might be okay -

So
 Hardaway, McGee, 2nd
for
Collins and AHoliday (to keep ATL under tax line)
?

Porzingis wasn't a bust here because he was a bad basketball player, he was a bust here because we paid him to be a GREAT basketball player and the second most important piece of the franchise and he couldn't be.  I have a ton of doubt that Ayton has what it takes to be the second most important piece of any franchise and that's how he's getting paid.

Wood and Bertans
for
Ayton
?

Does that change your interest level?

Nothing trade related.  His thumb is taking longer to heal than originally believed.  Extension talks very preliminary.

Don't you think that could possibly be trade related?

So, the theory is that shutting him down makes it more likely he gets traded?  I guess I’m missing your angle.

I continue to think that the only extension the Mavs have wanted to offer Wood before the TDL is the 2-year one that leaves him trade eligible. Every report has aligned with that narrative. But after the TDL, if he's still here, then it becomes a different story.

See Finney-Smith, D.

Detroit theoretically made Bogdanovic more valuable by bringing him in cheap and extending him.  Wood at 15/15.8 over the next two years would probably do that too…especially if the second year was TO or partially guaranteed like the Bojan deal.  That doesn’t seem unfair for Wood.  It is basically a 5% raise on the deal he agreed to 3 years ago.  Has he really done anything to make himself more valuable since that deal?  Houston would argue no after trying for months to get a deal for him.

Just that if you are seriously considering moving him this week, then why would you bring him back from an injury this week? Just let him heal longer and don't risk re-injury or some other injury.
