Mavs aren't getting much value other than a re-allocation of finances, but the negative value for Rozier/his contract (he's a a small guard with spotty numbers and a giant contract) may even be bigger than the negative for Bertans (whose bad contract ends much sooner).

With Mavs giving a pick as part of the deal? No way.

If you erase the pick and do the rest? I'm still very hesitant.

Oubre is more "name" than value. No defense. Injured. Contract expires in June so he's just a rental, but he's injured for another month or so, so little rental value available either. McDaniel is okay as a project, but he's neither a great shooter nor a great defender nor a great rebounder, so it's a gamble on what he might become. He's also a rental, and will be UFA in the summer.

So for me it comes down to that giant Rozier contract, that you're hoping to justify somehow. If you think like McDaniel AND you resign him for a number you like, there's likely no money saved, since you've swapped THJ/DB for Rozier (and maybe McD) at about the same total salary. Can Rozier somehow be that 3rd guard the Mavs are missing -- if so, then the bad money isn't too much to swallow. If not, then I'd steer way clear. And that's without a pick, of course.

I initially thought McD was a better prospect than he is, so I liked the trade. Most of what’s to like is getting off Bertans contract, but that is not worth a first. I do like my revised deal where they drop Oubre and add Hayward and PJ Wash then we add Bullock and McGee and change the pick to 28.


Hayward would be a player to help us finish out the year and see how far we can go, then use as an expiring in the offseason to get the guy we like. I’ve been so adamant about getting PJ cause I like his defense and shot blocking next to Wood on top of having 3 pt range.

I’m not a huge fan of Rozier’s game, but he is a ball handler and if he can get back to being at least not a negative defender, he would be the better choice to start next to Luka, IMO.
