I did not want this old guy, I want the other old guy.

I wouldn’t hate it as a minimum 3rd or 4th big.

More importantly, did he name his first son "Dirk"?

I'm back now, with time to look closely. Looks like it isn't enough, about like I thought.

A. Hardaway is only 19,602,273 in trade math. Per rules for post-season trade before July 1, you get to use the lesser of current salary or the upcoming season guaranteed base.

B. Salary list

THJ 19.603
JG     2.958
Bobi   3.5
Burke  3.15
Brown  3.0
Chriss   0.959
TOT  33.17

C. Trade match math

Max allowable to DAL for those players 41.5625
GH  + Wood = 43.592

As an aside, I think I see more promise in the 3-way with ORL that leaves out PJW. For the Mavs, it's GH for THJ/DB.

And rather than PJW, I prefer to pursue OPJ with the MLE. I like him a lot for that contract, I think he will be available, and since PJW will be looking for a big raise in only a year, I think OPJ on a 3-yr deal is a smarter add, and he has championship experience now.

Not being a shooter is a death sentence in the NBA right now.

I doubt that the problem is that nobody wants one of the 10 best defenders in the NBA. It´s what Morey is asking for in return for #23 + Thybulle. He´s shooting 32.4% from three for his career. It´s not like there isn´t a chance he could improve a bit at his age. Morey just can´t pay him next year, so he´s trying to cash in now. Obviously everybody around the league knows that, too.

Trade season is a lot less fun if everybody is smart. There is basically no sweet spot for trading anymore, when everybody knows you only extended a player to not lose an asset (John Collins) or that you are trying to trade a player early, cause you cannot pay them (Thybulle).

There are also rumours about possible Ibaka's return to europe. Milano and Virtus Bologna are the teams that want him.

1 Luka
2 Brunson
3 DFS
4 Hayward
5 Wood

with a bench of:

Dinwiddie
Bullock
Kleber
Washington

And OMG do I like my chances next year with this team.

IMO Washington should start in that scenario, he pairs up well with Wood on the front lines. Also helps protect Hayward's health and there's a very nice balance to the Dinwiddie/Bullock/Hayward/Maxi bench.

But yeah, that would be a fantastic trade and give the Mavs 9 reliable guys for the playoffs.

Well, you learn something new every day.

I do like the concept of Charlotte paying Orlando to eat Bertans and Charlotte taking back THJ as a more reasonably priced scoring wing than Hayward.  I wouldn't mind adding #35 to the deal as I think there is still room for a developmental big if you send out THJ and Bertans.  Adding Hayward and Wood to an already decent O would be a lot of mouths to feed, but how do you stop that offense?  The question would be how you go about sprinkling in enough DFS/Reggie/Porter/Maxi to keep the D in the Top 10.

These trade suggestions are creative and well thought out.   This is Mavs message board and it is what we do!   Maybe I will be surprised with another trade, but I think the most likely course of action is Nico getting commitment for a tax MLE guy.   Can they get Joe Ingles (if healthy) to accept a contract?   Thad Young?   Slo-Mo?  Some of the targets may be above the Tax MLE, but the ones who are not are likely going to have a lot of competition.    Can Dallas target 1 or 2 and get a commitment with their desired player?

I think that is the most likely outcome.  It adds a 10th player to what is essentially a 3 big (Wood, Maxi, Powell), 3 wing (DFS, Bullock, THJ) and 3 ball-handler (Luka, Brunson, SD) team.  The fun of this time of year is seeing if there is a logical way of upgrading the weakest link of one of those groupings AND add the TP-MLE guy.  Some days the focus is on Powell.  Some days it is THJ or Dinwiddie.  One way or another it feels like we are a bit light on the defensive side.

One possibility would also be to just sign Dragic at vet min to 14th spot and then wait for trade (could happen anytime) and buyout market. I am not so sure Cuban is willing to spend "30 mil" (counting tax) for someone we will have trouble finding minutes for.

They won’t have trouble finding minutes for Otto Porter Jr.

Yeah, I will be pretty surprised if the TP MLE gets awarded to a single player. I think any other significant addition will be made via trade.

I for one will be shocked if all three of those guys are on the roster come training camp.

I tend to agree with you. Looking forward to seeing how creative Nico can be with limited options.
