Don’t think the Mavs go zone. Zone will give the Warriors more open 3s. Think the defense was actually “okay” for a game 1. The Warriors made 27/43 (~63%) on non-restricted area 2s. Those are the shots that the Mavs want Golden State to take, but unfortunately they made most of them.
The real trouble for the Mavs’ defense was in transition. The Warriors really pushed it after Luka misses or turnovers. We know the Mavs missed a lot of open and wide-open 3s, which lead to long rebounds and runs out to transition. 13 turnovers is a lot for the Mavs, they need to win the margin by a landslide against Golden State. The Mavs also have to fight a little harder to secure the defensive rebound to finish stopped possessions, the Warriors crash pretty hard - and will continue to do so since the Mavs play at such a slow pace (lower risk for getting beat by fast breaks). The Mavs might want to consider pushing it more, to deter the crashing and keep Golden State from setting up their defense.
