Jalen 'Can He Play Alongside Luka?' Brunson
(04-06-2021, 08:38 PM)ItsGoTime Wrote: So, let me start out as saying I really like what JB has done this year. You guys don’t have to tap the breaks on 2nd best player on the team and star player talk, but I’m here to say, it wasn’t long ago that our JB star, second best player on the team couldn’t star his way past OKC. I myself will tap the brakes on that talk until I can see him reverse that outcome.

He is probably the third-best player at this point - on a team that 1) needs to trade its second-best player, and very, very soon, if he and the best player don't work out their on-court differences that are holding the team back, and 2) that has great chemistry outside of that lack of chemistry between its two best players, but is otherwise significantly lacking in talent.

Losing to OKC without Luka and KP is not a huge surprise. A team with JB as its best player isn't winning anything other than probably the lottery. That doesn't mean that JB isn't the second-most important long term piece on the team right now.

I get it, but losing to OKC with him in the game should never happen if he’s as good as some are proclaiming (we also had Maxi and DFS in that game who can’t be traded for anything but a superstar to some).

I like all players mentioned, I just will not see them as anything more than they are (good role players) until they can accomplish something without the real star (who has won games when the superstar has been out) and superstar on the team. Perspective.

Looking at NBA 2021 salary contracts on BB-Ref.com it.

Using 2021 stats for JB since he has played a lot this year...using career totals for other guys:

Jalen Brunson = PTS 13.0 AST 3.4 TRB 3.5 STL 0.6 FG% 0.538 3P% 0.403

#49 is no other than Fred Van Vleet...$21,250,000 12.0, 4.4, 2.8, 1.2, 0.407, 0.386
.
#50 ranked salary is $21M flat...Victor Oladipo 17.5, 4.0, 4.6, 1.6, 0.438, 0.347

#51 is Malcolm Brogdon at $20,700,000 14.8, 4.6, 4.0, 0.9, 0.468, 0.390

#57 Terry Rozier $18,900,00 10.9, 2.8, 3.8, 0.8, 0.408, 0.379

#63 Goran Dragic $18,000,000 13.9, 4.8, 3.1, 1.0, 0.463, 0.363

#66 Ricky Rubio $17,000,000 11.1, 7.7, 4.2, 1.8, 0.391, 0.324

#68 Eric Bledsoe $16,850,000 14.0, 4.8, 3.9, 1.4, 0.454, 0.340

#75 Dennis Schroder $15,500,00 14.2, 4.6, 2.9, 0.8, 0.436, 0.337

The $20M+ plus crowd I wouldnt put Brunson in that talent group yet...and not saying that he isnt going to be better than some of those guys someday/soon.

And...sorry for using only boring Box Score Stats.

Brunsons age factors into this im sure...along with the skills he possesses compared to the other guys on the list.   I think Brunson has really good dribbles, shot(mid and 3) and he knows how to take to the rim and finish with a bucket.

Mavs under-contract players (and core imo) in order of importance:

Luka, KP, Brunson, DFS, Maxi. Maxi I would trade for Collins but I don't think there's another deal out there atm I would move Maxi for.

...but let's trade him for some 35-year-old.

Zach Harper has Brunson as his current leader for 6th Man

Sixth Man of the Year

Criteria: My criteria for how you earn the 6MOY award are based both on how I view the award and what a lot of voting in the NBA’s past has said about the winners of the award.

*Did you score a lot off the bench? For many years, Sixth Man has gone to the best scorer off the bench.
*Did you anchor the second unit and also boost the starters? As minutes get staggered, being able to anchor a second unit and help out the starters while also on the court matters.
*Seriously, how much did you score? Scoring is really important for this award.

1. Jalen Brunson, Dallas Mavericks (previously 2nd)
Quick-hitter: Moved Brunson into the second slot this past week, and this week he’s getting the top position. Some of this is the slippage and unavailability of Jordan Clarkson. Some of this is because Brunson has just been really damn good. Even in a stretch over the last three weeks in which he’s had a couple of rough games, his overall production and efficiency stand out. For the season, the team is a coin flip when he’s on the bench, and they’re plus-5.0 points per 100 possessions when he’s on the floor. Brunson does all of the little things for them, and he’s making life easier on Doncic in the process. That’s what you want from your Sixth Man.

Happy to see this, I bet Tim is a little surprised as well.  Mark and Harp have been pushing Tim as sixth man material during the broadcasts.

Brunson is clearly one of the best players on the team and we quickly need to find out if for instance a Doncic-Brunson-Porzingis starting trio is something worth exploring.

That being said I fully expect Carlisle to keep him on the bench, the frontoffice to not get involved and then have everybody panic once it’s time to committ to a new contract for the player bc they have no idea if he’s actually a fit starting here alongside Luka and KP or not.

There is next to zero communication and planning within the MBT. I fully expect this to be their next clusterf***.

3 straight underwhelming games for Brunson...to the point where his minutes have gotten scaled back. I like Brunson, he's solid. But when considering giving him a big contract, does he still have an extra level to get to as a player or will he always just be a consistent 12-14 ppg player in a 6th man-type role?
