BRUNSON BURNER: to NYK for 4yrs/$104M (no SnT) | NYK docked 2025 2nd for tampering
I think the playoff run bumped Jalen's asking price up a little.  I think it is still probably north of 20 per year, but south of 25 million.   22 million would be fine.   If it gets above 25, that is a little concerning.   Mavs need to pay it though.

A 5/125 deal would look something like:

Year 1 - 22.5 M  (Age 26)
Year 2 - 23.6 M  (Age 27)
Year 3 - 24.8 M  (Age 28)
Year 4 - 26.1 M  (Age 29)
Year 5 - 27.4 M  (Age 30)

Some fun Brunson stats in this video:

- #1 most efficient floater in NBA last season
- Elite shooting numbers in every area of the floor during the playoffs besides the Above the Break 3, where he shot 32%
- Ranked 5th in total miles ran last season (DFS was 3rd)

From a fan standpoint, I definitely want Jalen to stay. But from a practical point-of-view, I think he will (and should) take the best offer.

*but* if I was in his camp I would definitely tell him not go to New York. After everything New York gave up in this draft to clear the space to sign him, anything less than an all-star season and advancing out of the first round will result in him being crucified by the New York media and fanbase.

In the end I think the cap part of NY trades on draft night is over exaggerated. They received a bunch of picks for their #11 and dumped Kemba, who had no future with Knicks or trade value anyway, in the process.

Between the Rose’s, dad on staff, Knicks punting the draft to clear cap space…just a ton of smoke that points to Brunson and NY.

I am convinced the Mavs are gearing up for the fight though.  If JB was going to NY no matter what then surely Dallas engages on SnT talks.  The fact NY is having to do all of this tells me Mavs aren’t playing ball and are ready to fight it out.

The biggest winner in all this is JB and I’m happy for him because he has earned it.

With no real insight I’d call it 60/40 Mavs right now.  Hopefully when FA opens the vibes are immaculate and JB stays in Dallas

Feels like Brunson is using Knicks for leverage just like other players have used the Mavs in the past, only he was also able to get his dad a job. Dude just knows how to win.

Are we going to forget this nugget by Jake Fischer? Of course things change... But the Mavs literally hold all the leverage here. JB wants to get paid. He wants to win. Knicks can't offer the best of either. All of these tweets just sound like posturing from reporters with their Knick contacts because they have to keep them happy to stay plugged in. This also works in their favor for content generation. Fans for the Mavs are now going to read every detail of their articles because of their open ended tweets about JB and the Knicks.

Even Steins quote if the Knicks can clear room they are a "threat". Sure they are a "threat for Brunson." But its of the same vein as North Korea threatening the USA with military might. I'm sure they believe they have a chance, but when push comes to shove, USA wins that battle every time if they had to focus.

Mavs are in the driver seat. As long as they aren't drunk this should end with a 12:01 am signing of Brunson and we all move on and laugh at the Knicks draft moves tonight.

As I've said before, IMO the only person who can screw this up is Mark Cuban. Brunson is a winner, and by all indications he wants to be here. I'm not worried about what the dumbass Knicks are doing, the only person who worries me is Cuban.

The Brunson news really bums me out.  Now the next week or so is going to be stressful.  I was hoping for a less stressful time while just looking at tax MLE guys.

I am sure Brunson is the focus.   Couldn't it be argued that guys like Irving, Beal, Anfernee Simons, Lavine, etc may be the smarter direction?  Can they open up enough space for those guys?   For instance, I can understand making all these moves if you can clear money for Beal.   Beal salary is scary but he has some star power.  If they could get Beal without gutting the team with players and picks, that could be interesting.

Although it appears Brunson is the #1 focus for now.

So my thought was they clear the space for Brunson, strike out, go after Malcolm Brogdon with a package that uses that space to give an unequal amount of salary (Toppin as an example) in return for Brogdon. Strike out on that and do the same with flat earth, strike out and go to the next player. The main thing is they strike out on JB.

Quote:New York’s elevator pitch to Brunson likely rests on giving him more opportunities to operate with that sort of primary playmaking responsibility than he’d ever have alongside Doncic in Dallas. Given both how much Randle has lorded over the offense over the past two years and how forcefully Barrett took the reins in the second half of last season, it very much remains to be seen how such a shot-creation timeshare would play out. Besides: Would a higher-usage role be enough to overcome Dallas’s significantly higher chances of contention and the fact that it can pay Brunson more money for more years?

If not—if the Mavs decide to pony up a no-hometown-discount deal of somewhere north of $80 million, and Brunson decides that he’d rather stay with the franchise that drafted him—then New York might not wind up with a whole hell of a lot to show for all of Rose’s draft-night wheeling and dealing. Conversely, if the Knicks blow Dallas out of the water with a deal closer to (or even topping) $100 million, can Brunson live up to it? How does this impact the development of Quickley? And how good can a Randle-Barrett-Brunson core be, anyway? Is all of this a whole lot of fuss for what might be an eighth seed?

My favorite part of the article.

I agree that the pitch is super weak and honestly, he may end up having lower usage than he expects there with Barrett and Randle but man....there is a lot of smoke right now.

I think we still have the edge but July 1st can not come any faster for me.
