TAKE DAT WIT YOU 10/15

Brian and Mark report their latest interview with Jason Kidd, who discussed his objectives going into the season.

Luka. Encouraging Luka, and all the Mavs, to be respectful to the referees. Yelling at the ref has never gotten a call changed. Advising them to move on, and speak to the refs calmly during a timeout if there is still an issue. Thinks they can learn from Kidd's own way of dealing with officials.

KP. Freeing him up to play however he wants to on the offensive end. There is no effort to keep him behind the three-point line. Wants KP to also play in the post and do some rim-running.

THJ. Wants Timmy to raise his defensive game a level. Thinks if he could accomplish that, he could be in the All-Star conversation. He already plays hard on that end, but there is room to increase his skills.

Doe-Doe “The Shark” Finney-Smith. Kidd has named DFS “The Shark” and JB “The Machine.” They are trying to develop The Shark's playmaking skills, and believe their new bench players will help avoid wearing him out during the season.

DP. Kidd likes to use two bigs, particularly to start. The Lakers used two bigs, even though the analytics contraindicated it, and it worked out well for them. He consulted the “Player Cabinet” of Luka, KP, and THJ to ask them who they recommended to start as the second big. All of them wanted Powell. Kidd was on board with that, ran it by the Brain Trust (Kidd, Dirk, Nico, Finley, whoever), and they were enthusiastic as well. He likes Powell’s high energy level to begin the game.

Josh Green. Still in the process of seeing what he has to offer.

Special Emphasis - Defense. They have focused primarily on defense so far. Will get to the offensive side in time.

Special Emphasis - Communication. This is at all levels of the organization. Better communication among the Brain Trust. Also between coaching staff and players. And among players. To wit, his engaging with both the players and the front office about on-court decisions.

Team. Has emphasized defense, so far. They will be able to concentrate on the offensive side later. There will not be a DPOG award this year, pursuant to consultation with the players.

Kidd. One of the main things he learned in his previous stints is that he should avoid trying to over-control things, and he is making it a point to take input and loosen the reins a little.

Lots of other interesting observations, but this is basically what could pass for news in this part of the calendar.
