2021-2022 ROSTER TALK: [ARCHIVED]
(06-01-2022, 09:16 AM)Chicagojk Wrote: I think the odds Powell is back next year over being moved.   I think he is a good culture guy and a "innings eater" in the regular season.  His playoff run was so disappointing though.   It is tough to get past that.

If he is moved, he is not an asset to teams.  He is just salary filler and expiring.   I believe Maxi, Josh Green, pick #26, and future firsts are our assets.  There is not a lot there, but for most of the names I am hearing you will probably need at least two of those to be moved...maybe more.   Maybe I am wrong.   But thinking Powell is going to be asset because he is expiring is a faulty thought process for me.  Now maybe include him with the listed assets above could work.  The Mavs offers can be beat in a lot of competitive players too.  It would really help, if the player prefers Dallas though.

The Mav’s have talked in the past about a “bullpen” approach at center.  So, if they simply add a guy at about the same level as Powell and Maxi, but who has a complimentary skill, then Powell likely stays.

But, if the idea is for the new center to be someone above and beyond Powell/Maxi, then some assets have to be outgoing…and some salary.  I agree that Powell doesn’t inspire any team to action.  He’s just an expiring means to an end.  But, he is the only contract of any size besides Maxi that doesn’t run multi-year.

I think the bigger question is Hardaway.  Does anyone view him as an asset?  I thought the mention about the resignation of the front office guy who pushed to keep THJ was interesting.  Maybe he’s the outgoing along with an asset or two for that center who is better than Maxi or Powell.  I’d like to see him here rotating with the other wings.  He might provide something valuable.  But, it isn’t like we didn’t have success without him and don’t have young developmental guys coming up behind him.

One other thing to add to the center discussion is the agent perspective.  Arguably the number one job of an agent is getting a player to a place where there is enough leverage to get the most money possible.  That isn’t always the current team.  Duffy would be well served to get Turner to a different team where his Bird rights are important.  Same with the agents for any 2023 big man FA’s (Poeltl, Zubac, Noel, Adams and Vuc.).  Not all of those are Dallas fits, but I could see some of those guys moving this summer.

Would love to add Poeltl, but SA has absolutely no use for our draft pick this year.  Plus, Poeltl would probably be an important element to any team they trade with to get a bigger fish like Ayton or Collins.  Not sure why Atlanta or Phoenix would need anything we have either (other than maybe Maxi or a defensive wing).
