I'm a fan of Poeltl and think he's very underrated. The opportunity with him is the fact he's expiring and we don't know what SA plans to do post Pop. Maybe he can be had if they are looking for picks rather than resigning him to bigger money at age 28 in a year.
He's always a very positive on-court contributor. My one hesitation is whether he can handle the more aggressive defensive scheme we run most of the time. He's more of a drop coverage guy and we aren't doing as much of that. Are all of the other things he brings to the table worth a change of scheme when he is in the game? Or, should we be looking for the best fit who happens to also excel at our scheme? Holmes isn't as good as Poeltl overall, but is more mobile as an example. PJ Washington isn't as good as Holmes overall, but is probably an even better fit from a scheme standpoint and can also hit a three pointer. Who would Dallas prioritize if given the opportunity to trade for any of the three at the same price?
