2021-2022 ROSTER TALK: [ARCHIVED]
So in response to a fear that Dallas may trade him if he stays, Brunson will instead choose between the team trying to trade Grant and the one trying to trade Randle? I don't see it.

Cade and Brunson would be a fun combo.  Grant+Bey+lottery pick might be a good squad.

How do you know they are really trying to trade him? They obviously didn't trade him. They put a very high price, that would likely help them rebuild even quicker

Mic drop!

Did anyone mention five years instead of four?

Coming from a guy that warned everyone in advance that it is Grant that chooses and it is far from given he stays in Denver? Smile

To add, Brunsons buddy Bey from Villanova days is in Detroit. Not saying it is certainly he will sign elsewhere, but it definitely is possible.

I think I'd give my odds to the most desperate team and that would be the Mavs.  They have no way of replacing him unless they hit another homerun in the draft.

They never played on the same team. Brunson was drafted in 2018. Bey´s first season was 18/19. His Villanova teammates that are currently under contract in the NBA are Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, Donte DiVincenzo and Eric Paschall. Looking back it is no suprise that they won in 2016 and 2018.

Speaking about draft and thinking way ahead. Options to increase flexibility.

Memphis has two late first round picks, currently sitting at 26 and 28 (Mavs at 21). Perhaps trading for those two.

OKC has pick #30. Would they trade us this one and one of their 2023 picks for our #21? It could be something like their worse 2023, but we gain full trade flexibility.

Indiana has #25 and #33.

Minnesota has 3 SRP, so I guess they would be willing to sell one.

Since our '23 has protections on it and could turn into our '24 or '25 FRP, I don't think getting someone else's '23 gives us full flexibility.

As long as it is an unprotected pick the Mavs are fine. But unprotected picks are pricy.

I don't think that matters.  Because our owed '23, could turn into our '24 or '25, they aren't tradeable.  You could trade the '23 you acquired, but '23-'25 are off the table until a pick is conveyed to New York.

In terms of picking up buy out player for this season…..I hope, like many, they are able to sign a player that gives us some rim protection but has better movement than Boban.  I would do this before Dragic.  If nothing else, for late game situations.

OKC has their own pick in 2023 and picks from Denver (if bottom 15), Detroit (if bottom 10, not likely) and Washington (if bottom 15, possible). So the trade would be for the worst of these picks, whichever would be. OKC would risk if all those three teams would have bad seasons and their pick would actually be the only one left.

Assuming Dallas re-signs Brunson, Dallas already has 15 players under contract next year. And that's before they have to let someone go to sign their 1st rounder. So barring a draft night trade with players going out, I don't see them looking to add more picks. In fact, I sorta suspect that's why they included their (protected) 2nd in the Washington deal. They have no roster spot anyway.

Trading down to also get a 23 1st rounder could make good sense, though.

True, it would not be full flexibility. But it would enable you to trade 2022, 2024 and 2027 (I think also 2029).

Got me there.  Suddenly, I feel bad about being right about the Grant thing.

To be fair, I certainly put out my share of "flight risk" posts regarding Brunson.  He's absolutely a risk...no doubt.  Impossible for us to know how much of one or whether he'd have any interest in quarterbacking a lottery team.

Regarding your pick question, we have 16 players next season if we make our pick assuming we don't cut Frank or Maxi.  If there isn't some great THJ plus 22 deal out there, I'd gladly trade 22 for 23 without requiring a pick in the current draft.  I like the idea of taking the worst of someone like OKC's picks.  We just have to know some pick will convey to then be able to trade the newly received 23 plus conditional 2025 and 27 (Cow is right about not being able to trade our own 25 until the NY pick conveys).  If we had another 2023, one of the ways we could get NY to lift the restriction would be to make the 2023 we send the best of our two picks.

BTW, Brunson at $20mm and DFS (plus all these picks and necessary pick swaps) are a trade match for Lillard.  You can add Green and pay Brunson less than $20mm if that is too big for a starting number.

i keep seeing people refer to the MBT's track record.  how does a brand new GM/Coach and Front office staff already have a track record? I understand Cuban and Finley are still around but they didn't bring in Nico and Kidd to just sit on their hands in player personnel meetings.
Patience is a dirty word on the internet but unfortunately we need to have it and we owe them the benefit of the doubt until proven wrong.

I think you can only trade '22 once selected.  I don't think you can trade '24 because our owed '23 can become '24 (or '25).  I think the end result is you could trade the '23 you acquired and '27.
