So Tim took a discount to sign with the Mavs. If you turn around and trade him 6 months later, who’s gonna take a hometown discount ever again?

I don't think Timmy took a discount out of sheer generosity for Cuban and his pockets. He did it because he felt the Mavs gave him the best situation for him overall. 

Looking at the other reported teams that offered him more, the Pelicans and the Pistons, I can see why he took the Mavs offer instead. There is a price and value to winning. THJ valued that. Timmy and his agent sat down and laid out his options and he took probably the biggest deal that gave him that. It just so happened to be the Mavs offering it. 

Further I highly doubt we'd be so motivated to trade THJ if he didn't put up 4 months of putrid basketball and no defense. There is accountability there. If a team wants to win a championship we can't be run as a charity. Thus, I don't think trading THJ would have any affect to how the Mavs are perceived. If anything we're sending THJ to a place where he'll be heavily featured next to one of the best PG's in the NBA and another supposed winning situation.
