Coming back to the luxury tax topic. Not a guarantee for more success but it certainly is a competitive advantage. Cuban going for it in the summer could make a big difference. Let´s use an easy example to highlight this.
Mavs make a trade at the deadline and use the TPE and/or Burke expirings contract to upgrade the roster. Can add assets in a trade and go for a better player or absorb a worse contract to collect assets.
Are the Nuggets willing to pay salary tax? Could the Mavs steal a guy like Monte Morris if they add a few 2nds?
Would the Suns give up their late 1st this summer to get out of Shamet´s or Saric´s contract? Would the Knicks return the 2023 pick if the Mavs absorb Kemba´s contract?
Added assets (Let´s say a late first or two second round picks) are the perfect preparation for a bigger draft day trade. After a full season and another playoff run with THJ and KP as the highest paid players the Mavs should have a better idea about the roster and the future of individual players.
The combination of the Mavs own 2022 1st and the added pick/s could be attached to various combinations of players.
To keep it simple is I will just assume that both Brunson and DFS return for a combined salary in the 25m range. With the added salary of a deadline trade that would put the Mavs deep into the luxury tax range (170-180m total salary). Sounds like a lot but that´s what teams like the Warriors, Nets or Clippers are paying right now. With Lakers and Bucks only slightly behind.
