This team desperately needs to start Porzingis at center with four smaller guys, which means
Doncic
Brunson (or THJ)
Bullock
DFS
Porzingis
This will serve mulitple purposes for evaluating the team and trade/future strategies:
1. Can Brunson hang with starting units?
2. Can Bullock re-discover his shooting stroke under small ball?
3. Can Porzingis actually defend from center, when he has four active quicker players around him?
4. Can Doncic defend better, when he matches-up with the opposing SF/PF?
Cause the Mavs interior defense with fat-a** Doncic defending the opposing PG/SG/SF and soft-a** Powell and slow-a** Porzingis getting beat from pillar to post in every single game is a** and their +/- numbers reflect it.
It´s completely irresponsible that they continue with this Powell starting sh*tshow.
That´s where the head coach and the GM need to work together, too. This can´t just be a coaching decision, because it impacts everything, not just the actual games.
If the head coach thinks that´s his decsion ALONE, then he is 100% correct. And it´s the GM´s decision ALONE, who that head coach should be.
We have seen these dysfunctional units before, where a franchise is still trying to make it work, because the players are big STARS. I have never in my life seen a franchise self-sabotage for somebody, whose value is somehwere between the bi-annual exception and a CBA MVP award for the Guangdong Tigers.
There was a line-up last night with Doncic, DFS, Powell, Porzingis and (I believe) Green. It was so obvious that nobody besides Luka could put the ball on the floor and attack the defense. I think it ended with a substitution after a 10-0 Pacers run.
They need to go smaller. They need to go younger. They need to add defense. They need to add play-making. That means more of Brown, Omoruyi, Ntilikina and Green.
AND ultimately a trade.
