Because they are the only good assets (good player on a cheap contract) on our roster, so if you have to make a trade desirable to the other side, you either have to add one of the 2 and/or drafts picks. And there is a huge possibilty that they are lured away from the Mavs by another team in free agency, esp. Brunson who seems to be looking for a starter spot, a significant contract and also seems to be more of an east coast person.
it's not that everyone dislikes them as a player, quite the contrary.
The Mavs can not allow their largest (only?) assests to leave for nothing. Guys like THJ or DP most likey have negative trade value due to the amount of money they are owed. Maxi is the only other player on the roster (other than Luka) that i would consider as slightlly positive value.
