In the modern league, there are maybe three PREMIUM players who are foreign born. One of them is here already. Another was clearly the target of the longterm free agency plans here but opted to re-sign with his team and just won a championship. The other is free when, 2023?
My point is, if the Mavs lean further into the Euro connection, I don't think that jives with the free agency splash plan. I agree that getting the best Euros here isn't a bad strategy, I just have this feeling Cuban won't be satisfied until he lands his legendary big fish.
I am not only talking about europe. Africa is the next big thing. Already started. More and more players in the league each year (as of now most of them bigs with incredible physical attributes). They don´t have the european development systems and strong national leagues. Meaning that most of them will try to make it in the NBA.
Looking at the current free agent market I could easily upgrade the roster around Luka without signing a single american player. Add the local guys and the pool gets even bigger.
Locals: Smart, Culver, maybe Turner, extend the range a little bit and Caruso is an option as well.
International: Fournier, Markkanen, Theis, Ntilikina, Schroder, Olynyk, Kanter
And I probably forgot some names. If the Mavs would turn into the premier destination for those players things would be a lot easier.
