Hollinger: Richardson’s trade value will be an interesting question given that the Mavs are playing against the clock. Somebody may have a need for him at $11 million once the music stops on free agency, but the timing is a problem. By that point, Hardaway may have already found another suitor as well.
As you point out, moving off Powell (and possibly Trey Burke too) is another way to get enough money to keep Hardaway and still reel in a major free agent, as long as Hardaway’s price stays in the $12-15 million range. However, the Mavs need to attach something desirable to get that done and don’t have draft picks to burn.
I think Brunson is a good call here. He has one year left at the minimum, so his contract is a huge win right now and it gives him some trade value. But the Mavs would already have Lowry and could sign another guard with their room exception once they were done dealing, so that might be their least-bad option … especially since keeping Brunson beyond this year would likely be problematic.
