That would be a huge steal, but maybe not as unrealistic as we think from Markkanen´s POV.Bulls don’t want salary coming back. This is the easiest way. The most player friendly contract we can fit in the TPE. Bulls get a 2nd and/or their pick of Brown/WCS/Terry. Nothing more. Seems like the best way for all 3 parties
If he cannot find a S&T this year, he has to play on the QO, then becomes an UFA and maybe sign a 68/4 deal next summer. That means he roughly earns $42M over the next three years. If he agrees to the TPE deal, it´s $34M. So he loses roughly $8M on a projected $42M vs. a guaranteed $34M, but gets to play for his preferred team. He doesn´t have to worry about UFA or injuries next year.
Also if he signs a three year deal now, instead of a four year deal next year, he´ll probably align his next free agency much better with the next projected (post pandemic) cap spike. As we learned with Mahinmi and Mozgov. You gonna get paid, if you time that right.
I´m trying to figure out whether it gives the Bulls more or less leverage, if Markkanen agreed to that contract.
