1 In the J-Rich trade, the Mavs didn't really want Brown (or any salary) in return. But certain cap rules made some outgoing salary necessary. BOS had players with bigger salary they wanted to insert instead (more for salary-moving reasons, than talent), but Brown's was the smallest. I'm not sure why anyone would quibble with that outcome.
2 If they do sign Dragic, they may not waive Brown right away (in case a trade arises needing small filler).
But if they don't see value in him at the moment, it's not likely to change. He shouldn't be asked to be in Summer League as a Mav, or training camp either (due to injury risk and the financial consequences). And they don't really need so many centers.
