A 2+1 year deal gives him the option to go for broke in 2023 or hold and let the bird rights allow him to get paid. The MLE also is the perfect price to fit into the Mavs TPE.
Just grab the dude now even if the fit isn't quite right with KP. Can always trade either of them later.

"Can always trade either of them later" ....If you're paying LM more than anyone is bidding, finding a taker in trade for that contract - and getting something you want in return -- is not a given. And, many already see trading KP as a dead end too..
