THT was pointless ... not only was he restricted (requiring you to tie up your spending for about a week while everyone else does deals elsewhere), but also an Arenas free agent, which is doubly bad as it messes with your ability to offer, but is easier to match. In theory, you are messing with the Lakers with the offer, but in reality, it's you getting screwed around.
Holmes is different, however. On that one, I don't get it, but my guess is that he himself made it difficult with demands, and there's no time for such crap with players getting taken off the board if you aren't ready to deal right away.
