To me the picture becomes pretty clear.
On one side we had Bob Voulgaris and Bill Duffy (NOT LUKA) and on the other side Donnie Nelson/Rick Carlisle and their established group.
Bob was on an expiring contract. He obviously botched the Green/Bey pick (for now, cause who knows) and Luka likes Donnie. So imho what happens is that Donnie/Carlisle thought they had enough credit with Cuban (botched pick Bob, Luka trust, years of relationship) to sit this season out and then push Bob out of the door at the end, so they can continue in their old happy complacent and unsuccessful ways.
But this time Cuban did not do what he usually does. Instead he went against Donnie and his failed methods/strategies.
Now Carlisle was stranded on an island, where he had no powerful ally, so the interference from Bob (which he hated, but tolerated in anticipation of his firing) was unlikely to go away. Furthermore Carlisle had beef with so many Duffy clients (Rondo, Collison, somebody else was mentioned), and now Duffy suddenly had the upper end in that relationship with Luka and a new GM, who might not protect Carlisle like Donnie did.
I think this is the best solution for everybody involved.
