Personally I think focusing on the "maskless" angle misses the larger point. The dude seems like he's on the verge of retiring because he doesn't care about basketball anymore.

https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1349026810768596992 Of all his accomplishments, I think to get Irving to focus on basketball for 12 months (or to keep all the BS under wraps) is LeBron´s greatest achievement.

This Kyrie stuff is so weird. People here are saying that he doesn’t care about basketball, and I can totally see where that idea comes from. On the other hand, I’ve seen him play three or four times this year and he has been amazing. He’s a truly underrated player, in my opinion.
I’m honestly not sure what to make of any of it. I am glad he’s not on my team, however.

It is obvious "People here" and you are both correct. Being an idiot and being good at basketball are not exclusive

Oh, I don't think there's any doubt he's an idiot. My post contained nothing to counter that idea.
I DO wonder whether there's truth to the idea that he "doesn't care about basketball." Being an idiot and caring about basketball aren't exclusive.
Read more carefully, please.

His talent is undeniable. The league obviously can't openly discuss his personal situation, but my unprofessional personal opinion is that from everything I've seen I suspect he's bipolar. When he's on, he's terrific. When he's off, he's in a completely different world often detached from reality. So when I say he "doesn't care about basketball" maybe the more accurate description is that I'm not sure he's even capable of focusing on basketball right now.
Speaking solely as one human being to another, I wish Kyrie nothing but the best and want him to be happy. That could mean taking a break from basketball and focusing on himself, or proving me wrong and finding happiness on the court. But the status quo doesn't seem to be working, so something has to change.

You might be right about the bipolar thing. If not that, then there's certainly something abnormal going on with him.
I think what rubs fans the wrong way is that no matter what he says or does, what makes him different almost always comes across as entitled. Clueless. Completely detached from the reality of how fortunate he is to be in the situation he's in and the lifestyle that comes with it. Mix in the fact that we're living in a time when paradigms of how college and pro athletes are expected to comport themselves are being challenged, and it's a perfect storm of bizarre.

Mental illness can also be exacerbated when you're self medicating with legal or illegal substances.

Kyrie Irving is going to have a documentary one day about his incredibly odd career.
14x All-Star, 12x all-NBA, 1x MVP, 1x Finals MVP, 1 NBA Championship: Dirk Nowitzki, the man, the myth, the legend.

Wasn't Kyrie one of those very opposed to the bubble? So could it be that he withdrew himself once the infections started?
