Trade & Free Agency 2026/2027

I’m glad May and Masai value Kyrie more than you.

He ain’t getting traded. Not unless it’s for a boatload of assets.

Dallas can pay him 15 million easily. They literally have all kinds of flexibility.

Agreed on Fox's contract (still not sure what SA was thinking there), but that's what enables the ask to be greedy and why SA may consider.  And while Fox has injury and playoff performance issues in his own right, he's still a player you'd be ok having on your team as he'll make you competitive.  3FRPs and/or reversing that pick swap gives you a ton of flexibility and you can never assume the value of picks that far down the line as you are an injury or a Luka trade from those ending up in the lottery.  Fox stops you from being bottom dweller and is probably better than any other player you'd return for Kyrie at the position and by the time his contract ages out is probably when this team will be ready for contention (hopefully).

Also, I think you'd be doing Kyrie a solid which is plus in my book.

We are on a much shorter timeline than you think we are.

IMO, what Kyrie is bringing right now goes beyond the stat sheet. He's turned into a really likeable veteran who has seen the elephant. He is an important part of the current team's offense, but he doesn't have to carry it every possession. He's genuinely excited about the young guys successes; not just Coop but others like Sasser and Clayton as well. I mean, how many 15 year vets get off the bench to celebrate any effort by a 2-way player? He's leading the effort to build that type of culture and cCamaraderie that will be key to this teams success this season and beyond. I'm not sure he's going anywhere unless he indicates a desire to move.

I'd be fine if Kyrie retired a Mav as he's been a wonderful, is still incredible to watch, and he, along with May, are pumping confidence into the youngsters.  I just don't know if he wants a shot at another championship as I don't think that our timeline and his lines up in that regard.  He's our best shot at refilling the cupboard, but I'd also turn down the best offer if it was somewhere he didn't want to go.

I don't think there is any chance SA pays 3 picks to get off Fox contract.

Mostly with you, but it is a horrible contract so I wouldn't be interested in less.  Spurs core three may be so good that they don't need the Fox to Kyrie upgrade, but that money savings from that deal might be handy for retaining those three and putting a decent roster around them.

Before the season you were highly critical that the team needed more creativity and Burries would have cured all ills. How are you feeling now?

Also, SA would be paying 3 FRPs to get off Fox AND GET KYRIE. Just in case you missed that part. Smile

To do that deal at the TDL the deal has to be Kyrie and Caleb Martin and for that the pick swap in 2030 needs have Dallas get the most favorable and San Antonio the least. Dallas should then get a first in '28 and 2-3 seconds. Even then that deal might be light for the salary commitment D. Fox represents. To the point that IF Kyrie has talked to Charles Barkley and says he does NOT want to go to San Antonio I am ok nixing a Fox body based trade.

IF we were to get a full house: 3 firsts and 2 seconds; or MAYBE 2 1st rd picks; 2 2nd rd picks, and the pick swap kicker, then we trade Irving against his will and hope Kyrie understands the business.

My initial interest is opening a roster slot for Clayton Jr. and dumping Caleb Martin, BUT that FOX CONTRACT is no joke.

Main problem with SA is not Fox contract imho. It is the fact that he positionally overlaps with their second and third best player. Kyrie doesn't solve anything of that.

SA has also more or less no salary problems until 2028-2029 season when Castle extension (probably max or very close to max) will kick in. They are comfortably under the first apron (19 mil) for next season with Keldon Johnson the only notable FA.

Um, the proposed deal is Kyrie outgoing, which would be of significant value to them.

There are $181 million reasons and 3 years where Kyrie solves that overlap. Only $171 if Martin is part of the deal and $120 million for two years IF they both opt in.
IS Fox addition by subtraction for SA yet?

Excellent points, and pretty well ends the conversation. If SA isn’t motivated to do it, they won’t give the necessary compensation.

Cow does make the excellent point that getting off the Martin contract in a two for one deal is a must-accomplish for the TDL unless they’re willing to stretch-waive him by then. Thanks a lot, Nico.

Yep.  Talent upgrade + yearly salary relief + long term salary commitment reduction.  Fox is on the hook for the next four years for $229m.  Kyrie is $82m over the two years if he opts in.

There are 48 minutes in a game so I don't agree with the overlap sentiment and if you could redo last years finals with Kyrie replacing Fox, I'd put money on Spurs closing out those games that a more experienced team probably would have won.

There are more mouths to feed than the core three that you will not be able to do with the money owed to Fox. Saving money while upgrading the talent would make them a ton more flexible.

edit: derp, 82 games, 48 minutes, not 82 minutes lol

While I purposed Martin as part of the swap months ago, SkenfromLMF brought it up during this iteration of the conversation.

To be clear, I don't think this will happen, but it is fun to think about.

Looking at the numbers I am not sure Dallas can even absorb Fox for Kyrie as a stand alone trade.

Way too early in the Coop experience to be looking at a player like Fox with that contract IMO. I think the Mavs should be looking to retain as much financial flexibility as possible over the next2-3 years unless they have a chance at a guy who's absolutely clear cut that second option next to Flagg for a the next 6-7 years minimum. If Coop was older and we were further along hitting the contention window and getting a bit more desperate to find solutions, a player like that might be a bit more palatable.
