NEW: I sat down with Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont in Macau. We discussed the arena project, his relationship with Mark Cuban, why he hired Masai Ujiri and Dumont wanting to take a “patient” approach to building around Cooper Flagg. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7671495/2026/10/08/mavericks-patrick-dumont-owner-interview-cuban-flagg/?unlocked_article_code=1.HFE.sy9t._g5xBglgKecG&source=emp_shared_article&smid=url-share-ta

I see complaints here and there about the Mavs getting Morez, when Yaxel and Mara are looking like great prospects. When that happens, I relax with the thoughts that:
1 Morez has lacked any opportunity to impress. That time is coming. 2 Of all the evaluators to compare those 3, the Mavs had the best - May, their coach who saw every practice, every game, every comparison. If anyone had the inside view, it was him. And he got his 1st pick. 3 So the exploits of the other 2 leave me thinking: if they look that good, how good is Morez going to be? That's exciting to consider.

Nice little story about Cooper Flagg, how he has grown (not physically!) and looks more than ready for his sophomore season:
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/5016...icks-china
Jaren Jackson Jr: What can you tell me about the finals in 2011? Dwyane Wade: We got whooped on pretty good. We got whooped on. We were cocky now. We were like ‘Yeah, we’re a little cocky, we're a little cocky. Nobody can mess with us.' Like we were at that point. You know how you get sometimes, you get a little bit too much up here. I think Dallas, they saw that. They felt that and they punched us in the mouth. And when they punched us in the mouth, we couldn't get back up. And even though we went in and won game after we lost game two being up like 17 at home, we went in one game three. We still in the driver seat. We was wobbly though. You know what I mean? I just learned that you just got to stay here, bro. You got to stay even kill. You can't go with the roller coaster. You can't ebb and flow. You got to stay even kill through it all. And so didn't want to do it, but we needed that loss.
Dwyane Wade: We don't win back-to-back championships if we don't go through that. If we win that, we may not win again because we gonna be we gonna talk so much. I mean, we were hated. So, if we win this, we are ‘I told you so.’ And I told you so is not going to put you in a mindset that you need to be in to make sure you're ready to compete and prepare for the next season and next season, next season, right? God knew what he was doing. He knew not to give us that. He knew we needed to go and continue to earn it. Dallas made us earn it, man. I give them a lot of credit. I know it's a lot of conversations with ’06 and ’11. Me, as I told Dirk (Nowitzki), me and him, man, our stories, we just it just goes like this. You know, 06, we didn't supposed to get it. And know in 11, they didn't supposed to get it. But actually, we were. And so, I'm thankful for Dallas for beating us in the 11. Even though that was my finals MVP I was going to go get, cuz I was balling, we wasn't a team that we needed to really be. And you see it in those moments. That's the moments where you get to see what you're really made of. And I realized in those moment we're actually not who we think we are and they were, they more of a unit. They're more together. They executed when need to be. We wasn't executing and the rest is history. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qmd2HylksDc&t=2063s

Kyrie Irving: FOH! Can’t be serious. Polymarket: JUST IN: 3D-printed salmon is coming to U.S. supermarkets, produced by Israeli food technology company Steakholder Foods [that contains zero actual fish in it].

And I have to admit, that I thought this would never happen. So congrats to him. But the truth is also, that this championchip is particulary so historically exceptional, because of his attitude back than: Cockiness was overwhelmed by team. David defeats Goliath. It doesn't get any better than this.

DLLS Mavs: Mavs guard Marcus Sasser on his first impression of Cooper Flagg: “He’s amazing man. It’s hard to believe he’s that’s young. He’s so unselfish. He knows the game.” Dusty May anticipates that Marcus Sasser (left adductor tightness) will play tomorrow in the preseason finale against the #Hawks. He doesn’t think Santi Aldama will, but he’s getting “much, much closer.”

Mavs waive John P. Some think this could be a cisse spot if released. Although now Stein says that can’t happen in Dallas
https://x.com/thesteinline/status/211157...43755?s=61 Sucks for John P. The fringe nba up and down can be brutal. Not sure if he is a real nba player but took the opportunity and tried to make the most of it. Was around all the time this summer and worked extremely hard only to be cut right before the season and lose that two way salary.

Obviously not an NBA level talent. I don’t know why some fans talk about how crap the team is but get excited about 2-way dudes who will never make a difference.

Although now Stein says that can’t happen in Dallas I wonder what Dallas plan is for the last two spot. There were reports Walter Clayton may not make Memphis grizzles roster. He was not great in either Utah or Memphis but was awesome in college. Could he be a target if released? Could be a two way who can dribble and shoot.

Sounds like they will just pick up somebody else to get a look at.
Sochan just got waived, Kobe Bufkin as well. Both former relatively high picks not too long ago just like Jett Howard. Clayton was a 1st last year. Might be one of them. I hope they keep Cisse. He seems promising. Good athlete, strong dude, long and plays hard. Looks like an NBA big to me when I see him run the court and jump around. Gafford | Morez | Cisse + Aldama soon to be back ++ Lively one day *fingers crossed* I get the appeal of keeping Powell around but maybe you can just start Morez and have Gafford anchor the second unit. I think that’s a highly likely outcome anyways. Gafford has always been good here off the bench. He also struggled majorly at times when he started (at the beginning of Klay‘s first season here)

@TheSteinLine
The Mavericks waived Seth Lundy today but I'm told he has emerged as a candidate for the two-way roster spot that Dallas just opened. Lundy was drafted No. 46 overall by Atlanta in 2023 and played against the Hawks for the Mavericks last night in the teams' preseason finale. |
