MAVS NEWS:
(11 hours ago)Scott41theMavs Wrote: I saw this discussed on the Discord. What's the link between Handy and Kyrie?

Not sure where it started, but he's always on a team with either LeBron or Kyrie. I assume he was with them both in Cleveland. Now, he seems to be ditching Kyrie for LeBron, which makes sense, honestly. Philly will be a better team, obviously, and he might find some chemistry with Maxey or Edgecomb, maybe? LeBron and Kyrie are both winding down, and what's going to be here for him in Dallas if they flip Kyrie at the deadline or next summer? I can't see him hitching his wagon to someone like De Larrea, haha. This team is trending European again, which I'm into.

Maybe they'll get off to a rough start and inquire about trading for Kyrie.

I hope they add Powell to the coaching staff, though he wants to play one more year, but at some point he needs to be back in the organization as coach or some other slot.

Klay Thompson plans to sign a two-year, nearly $13 million deal with the Miami Heat after clearing waivers, with a player option in the second season, sources tell ESPN.

So does that mean the Mavs saved roughly $6.5 in cap space this season?  If it's anything less then they were played like a b----.

Whatever amount he gave up comes off our books.  It isn’t cap space though.  It adds to the space under the tax.

So, that room under the tax possibly went from $2.3mm to something in the $8.5mm-$8.8mm range depending on how the $13mm is structured over the two years.  If you assume we aren’t going over the tax line (and will maintain some cushion), it means we have about $7.5mm in usable margin.  It could be used now or later to sign someone with a portion of the MLE we have left.  It could also be used in a trade match if that level of margin makes the trade legal - for instance a $10mm player out for a $17.5mm player coming back.

Yeah, I didn't necessarily mean cap space. Just in a budgetary total against the cap and various tax and aprons.

FWIW cap sheets shows the full buyout amount of Klay and has the Mavs $8,639,064 below the tax line.

Tons of flexibility to make a TDL deal or two and stay under the Tax Line.

Incredible maneuvering for the FO, from just 6 months ago, when it was a grim financial outlook.

When you say “cap sheets” are you saying that is the actual reported number or what you have on your own spreadsheet?

Cap Sheets is a site Yossi Gozlan runs. Third Apron guy that’s legit.

For the millionth time: man it sucks how this team never got the chance to compete again after the Finals run. Kyrie Luka Klay PJ and DLive was a phenomenal starting / finishing group for a quarter of a season or so before they flushed it all down the toilet. I really thought that was an even better team than the year before. Still hurts.

Good for Klay though to finally be able to move on. He was really caught up in a bad situation here timing wise given the few seasons he has left.

Direction wise this is once again the right move.

I am very low on Christie in general and are instead rooting for a Risacher breakout season between Kyrie and Flagg at whatever you want to call that position. He is said to be quick enough to guard down a few spots. I hope they are as willing as I am to give Risacher an extended look there.

If he is ring chasing it’s not going to end the way he hopes.

I look forward to seeing Mavs have a better season than Philly.

Did the rules for set-off amount change in the new CBA? I thought it would be Klay's 1st year salary with Miami minus a 1 year vet min divided by 2.

($6,341,463-$2,185,116)/2= $2,078,174 saved for the Mavs. Klay's cap hit would still be $15,382,143 for tax/apron purposes.

1 A buyout is an agreement to take less. Negotiable number.
2 It often matches the new salary. But not required. Again, negotiable.
3 Set off can be oddly utilized, and negotiable. They might agree to no set off.  Again, negotiable.
4 The numbers don't have to neatly align to anything. But often they match up somehow.
5 MIA has cap or apron or exception limits in play somehow. DAL likely prefers to pay least possible amount for Klay playing for MIA. Those issues undoubtedly came into play.
6 Actual salary from MIA and cap hit to DAL will emerge eventually. But difference between this possible number or that should be mostly of no matter. Nickels and dimes.
