Trade & Free Agency 2026/2027
Note how relatively dead and inactive the board has been for the past week, and that’s with the logjam clearing of LeBron making his retirement home decision. That’s because it was never Queen Jane holding the league hostage, but rather that ultra-incompetent investigative firm looking into Kawhi/Balmer/trees. The NBA is screwing over the other 29 teams by not making the investigators wrap it up and divulge their findings right now. I’m telling you, without something to accelerate the process exponentially, the earliest it will be done is mid-September, and perhaps later. Does the NBA really want to go into training camp with several of its RFAs still unsigned? Please stop the clown show, Silver.

Silver doesn't have any GOOD way (one that would be satisfying to you and me, especially) to fast track the investigation and results.

Would you happy if he announced, "It's taking too long, so never mind"? Yeah, I didnt think so. Me neither.

Per the CBA and owner rules, the investigators don't get to make the final decision. They find facts and recommend. But what they say has to be solid and hold up to scrutiny -- before any penalty is imposed, there is a hearing, and then the hearing can be appealed.

So until they have found SOLID proof of something with evidence that will hold up when challenged, they can't just stop.

This IMO is by far the biggest challenge the NBA faces this summer. It will probably get ugly but they have to get this right. I don’t pretend to know what right looks like but I do know conjecture about this looks devastatingly bad. We are probably or soon be waiting on lawyers. This probably won’t be fun at all.

[Jackson] Finding a way to acquire Klay Thompson remains a “priority” for the Miami Heat. Miami has had conversations with DeMar DeRozan and Bradley Beal. Miami would like to add another big man.

Thompson remains the Heat priority, even though there’s no indication when or if he will shake free from Dallas.

The Mavericks, well below the luxury tax line, have no particular financial incentive to dump Thompson — who’s owed $17.5 million in the final year of a three-year contract — unless he’s willing to take a significant pay cut on a buyout.

The Heat might end up needing that $8 million in exception money to bridge the gap with what he would be losing by taking a buyout with Dallas.

So far the off season for the Pelz has consisted of signing DeAndre Jordan and Kobe Bufkin.

Imagine your team getting to sign Kobe and Jordan in a single off season.

This seems to be coming from a Pelican site, so just a rumor.

GAfford and Martin for Poole and several 2nd round picks.

I don't want to lose Gafford at this time, but moving 2 for win gets the Mavs down to 15 and on top of that you get rid of the teams end of the bench player now and not summer of 2028.

I think they might make a move like this, how many and which 2nd round picks may decided a trade.

Poole is a free agent at this point next summer, I assume a RFA, but adds guard to the team and he has a year to see if he fits on the team.

The New Orleans Pelicans and Kobe Bufkin have agreed to a one-year deal, league sources told @hoopshype. Bufkin was the 15th pick of the 2023 NBA Draft. He’s spent the past three seasons with the Hawks and Lakers. He averaged 21.3 points in Summer League with the Pelicans.

What about a 3-team trade that helps everyone…

DAL: Shaedon Sharpe (+2.6M)
MIA: Klay Thompson (+1.3M)
POR: Nikola Jovic (-3.9M)

It gives the Mavs a 23 yo 6’5 combo guard (hopefully the one guard Schmitz likes).
Gives the Heat the guy they want in Klay.
Then Portland gets the front court help they need and frees up some guard minutes for the Vets and Scoot, while saving the cheap owner money.

Yeah, and then Portland can give us Scoot for PJ or (sorry in advance to cow) Naji.

I think the Mavs will do right by Klay if he wants to leave. He came here to play with Luka on a contender and had the rug pulled out from under him. Then despite being benched and suffering through a tanking season he said and did all the right things, including being incredibly supportive of all the young players in the locker room.

If he wants a buyout they should give it to him. Just like last February, Klay has no trade value on his current contract unless Dallas is taking similar money back.

1 I wouldn't do THAT deal because none of the Mavs issues are solved, and it is financially upside-down for the Mavs. I don't like ending up with ANY of these results:
- They end up paying tax.
- They still have too many players on the roster.
- They don't get "paid" for Klay-to-MIA (which they priced at 1 FRP).
- In today's NBA, total dollars swapped - while not a CBA thing - tend to be a fairly big part of the equation. Mavs would be sending out 17M and taking back 90M in obligations. They should want to get paid for that huge difference somehow.

2 Like you, I would trust that Schmitz would know if Sharpe is worth having. But otherwise he doesn't excite me. He's an inefficient ultra-high-usage player on a big long contract, which doesn't look like what Mavs want. I'm not a fan of the ball hog who sees his role as getting his points. But he looks like a VERY bad fit in PORT, now bumped to backup role, so I have to imagine POR would love a taker, which opens a door.

3  Assuming he was approved by MS, however, that's promising. But if so, then I would still hope for some tweaks, to make it look like this.
DAL: Shaedon Sharpe, FRP from POR
POR: Nikola Jovic + Martin, FRP swap to POR (from MIA)
MIA: Klay Thompson

SOME NOTES ON THAT VARIATION
DAL still adds lots of money (90M in, only 37M out). But they solve some issues, and if Sharpe has some utility to fill a role here, then the money can make sense. He might get in the way of minutes and development of young guards.
POR has roster room to add the extra body, and still stays a few mill below the tax line. Martin might have some utility to them. They have plenty of picks to work from.
MIA wins this trade, unless Jovic has some real value to POR. But they have no other real assets to offer, unless they toss in a pick swap to POR.

That means Portland gives up the best player, the best draft pick and eats the two worst contracts. Somehow I don´t think that is happening.

Then just accept it for what it is - a big "I'm out" on the trade suggestion.

"Portland gives up the best player, the best draft pick and eats the two worst contracts."

If POR loves Sharpe with his 90M owed, then of course this isn't a deal for them. But if not, Sharpe owed 90M is the worst contract here. The combo of Jovic (62) and Martin (20) saves them money. It also gives them 2 shots at ending up with someone useful (or smaller contracts to offload later, with both being smaller than MLE which is helpful when looking for a taker).

Then again, Sharpe isn't all that interesting to me anyhow. I think he would be a poor use of 90m. BUT if he's headed this way for some reason, I certainly want Mavs issues handled as a prerequisite for the deal.

If Klay is sought by Miami as rumored, then he has some trade value. Dallas is under no pressure to dump him.  It’s up to the Heat to find partners and parameters for a trade.

I honestly wonder whether the Mavs could pull the trigger on Thompson for Jovic, if they find a trade for Washington/Gafford. Jovic had a bad season last year, but Miami also ran that weird offense. I´m not even sure they want to trade Jovic. Why would the Bucks not ask for him?

I always like to judge international players on their national team performance. That´s why I never gave up on Markkanen or Hachimura. Here is Jovic´s stats from the European qualifiers two weeks ago: 27 PPG in 27.5 MPG on 68/62/89 shooting.

He seems the perfect floor spacer for Giannis/Bam for Luka here.  Tongue

Think we have to remember that Masai is notorious for being almost excessively stubborn in demanding super high value for assets in trades. Always been considered extremely tough to negotiate with in trades. Even to the point he'd hold onto assets arguably too long because he wouldn't lower his demands.

We haven't really had a GM like that before so it feels like we aren't really taking that into consideration much when speculating.
