Lakers signed Ziaire Williams who played for Nets last season for vet min. Still young(ish), can play defense and shoot a little. Interesting thing - this is at least third move this season for a player who is represented by Aaron Mintz (Kessler and Sexton are also).

Good stuff Dan. This highlights how both could be used differently, especially in different 5-man lineups. Of course the coaching staff has all of this info. I know they’re not running offensive sets to maximize the 4th or 5th best option on the floor, but I do expect May and Co. to know what each role player does well and try to maximize their strengths within that role! A lot of front court combinations are intriguing. May’s basketball mind gives me hope…

Agreed and I might take it a step further.  The guys buying the groceries know this information as well as they are designing who they thing goes where on the depth chart.

If Klay went to Miami for $7mm and took a $7mm discount on his buyout, that would put Dallas $23mm under the tax.  It is one thing to have a $21mm TPE, but you effectively can’t fully use it in a non-tax paying year if you aren’t $21mm under the tax.  If Klay gave Dallas that discount, it would give them room to pay Cisse and have the full TPE amount under the tax in case something came up (or was planned).

Yeah, I can see this - good stuff. 

Earlier in the summer I kind of thought we were headed down the "take Jovic and some serious draft capital off of Miami's hands in exchange for Thompson" road, but after the Aldama trade I just don't think there's enough room in the rotation here to offer Joivc much of a reclamation chance. I'd be super surprised if Dallas had any intention of taking his contract. 

But, I could see a 3 way deal that involved Jovic, maybe? Miami has to be desperate to unload the contract, after all.

The one season we actually had somebody competent (Lindsey) in the FO prior to Masai we used a TPE.  Given these guys went through the effort to keep the TPE available as opposed to the MLE, it seems like they have every intention of using it.

Summer isn't the only time those can be used.  It doesn't feel like we are done yet, but who knows.  But being $16mm or more under the tax and a means for taking back money in deals could prove valuable in Jan/Feb at the TDL.

I think he will announce it sooner. If something drags on for too long, it also loses its appeal and interest. 

Today Silver has a press conference before the board meeting and he will probably need to answer some tough questions about Kawhi/Clippers and also the Trent contract in Milwaukee (according to Stein). It would be of great use if this is overshadowed by LeBrons decision.

Edit: on a side note I am really glad Lakers decided to move on (or LeBron did it for them, however one prefers the narratives). I would hate this summer if it would be all about him.

Update on Austin Reaves’ contract with the Lakers: Final terms are four years, $180 million, with a player option in 2029–30, league sources tell me. Reaves agreed to a lower amount than the previously reported $185 million to help give Los Angeles more future flexibility. Bobby Marks: The Austin Reaves contract is the maximum allowable salary in year 1; $41.2M. Year 2 is a roughly 4% increase off year 1. With the cap only projected to increase 5.5% in 2027-28, we are seeing a trend in how contracts are structured in the second season.
