Seems like teams are really cautious with their payrolls except for the ones who are going for it.

I think a lot points towards DAL being mostly done. Gafford probably has no market, PJ is making a lot of money as well. Maybe Klay and Marshall but it seems like they want to hang onto them.

I seriously wonder why the Lakers didn´t simply sign Kessler and dared Ainge to match it. Utah keeps Kessler they have committed $184M for 12 players. Next year they have to pay George and maybe Sensabaugh, too. Not that easy, when you have 135M committed to just three players at PF/C. And who gives you two 1st round picks for Kessler on 35M/year, once he signs the deal.

Thanks for the thoughtful analysis. The only thing I don't agree with (necessarily) is your conclusion on the likelihood of an unprotected MIA '29 1st becoming significant. I think the chances are better than you do, but it's obviously not a given.

I thought about it, but it´s the East and Giannis will "only" be 34/35. They also have a top 3 coach and an attractive destination. 2032 would be more appealing, but that only seems to be a swap possibility, and if we are not better than Miami in 2032 with a 27 year old Flagg, then it went pretty wrong.

I don't love Harris, but I like his fit with SA. They need spacing for Wembenyama.

Harris has some Harrison Barnes in him.  Great teammate, great professional but enter a big game and need  big shot made....they are not your guys.

I'm going to predict that Thompson gets moved, no matter what. Due to the payroll-conscious thinking you correctly point to above, his expiring deal is pretty alluring for teams, and Dallas is currently situated nicely, in both financial flexibility and lack of on court expectations, to eat a little bit of salary some team wants rid of. It might be for a young player with no current path to realizing their potential, or it might be for a vet with a bad contract they agree to eat in exchange for draft capital, but I'd be pretty surprised if they don't do something with Thompson's expiring contract. They're significantly under the tax, so now's the time to think that way. 

With Marshall, I think it's about whether or not the new front office thinks he fits here, and we just don't know. If they do, they'd better be pretty sure, because they're going to need to extend him soon. If the goal is to keep him I wouldn't be comfortable with the situation dragging out past the trade deadline, or they'll wind up significantly overpaying next summer. If they don't see him in their longterm plans, they probably should move him either now or at the deadline and let the next team negotiate his extension. That seems to be the safer move these days - the "just get him on a good deal - we can always move him later" strategy might be harder to execute right now than in the past. Maybe the new Mavs front office doesn't know yet whether they want him? It's harder to predict whether he'll be here, imo.

Just in: Free agent forward Tobias Harris has agreed to a two-year, $31 million deal with the San Antonio Spurs, sources tell ESPN. Harris exits the Pistons after helping lead a franchise turnaround and now joins a young contending team in the Western Conference.

Sneaky good pickup by them. I think Harris will look a lot better next to Wemby than Duren.

31/2, not 62/2. Basically Detroit swapping out Harris for John Collins. I have to say, I´m so depressed by the length of Cade´s contract, cause the Detroitanic is headed straight for the iceberg, but it´s still in the harbour.

Pelinka had to "do something" or he'd be fired, and Ainge knows it, just like everyone else on planet Earth. He knew Pelinka couldn't afford to tie up his resources until 7/9 or 7/10 in a waiting game, and he used that knowledge to pants Pelinka. Beautiful work, imho.
