Well still early in the game, but lets talk contenders:

Denver-  They have to have a move.   What will it be?
Miami-  Cant say are a contender now.  Fun, yes but not a contender.   Can they find some upgrades besides minimum guys
Minny-  also fun,  but not a contender.  Do they move Gobert?  What do they do at PF?
Cleveland-   They lost Wade.   They can't just run it back right?
Detroit-  Seems all over the place with their moves.   
Houston-  Still seemed stuck in tier 2 in the West.

Or Ament (or Yaxel).  I preferred Burries, but Rez was next in line and that was before hiring May.  I have no issues with the draft.  I do hope they do something this offseason to balance out the roster.  Not a huge fan of Sexton but would have been totally fine with that contract.

Jake Fischer: The Clippers will create a trade exception by helping facilitate John Collins’ sign-and-trade to Detroit, sources say. Collins’ three-year, $51 million contract with the Pistons is only guaranteed for the first season, as @omarisankofa reported. I’m told Detroit wasn’t willing to offer Tobias Harris more than one guaranteed season, either. With the Lakers business today, let’s see if Harris or Rui Hachimura end up signing into the Spurs’ open forward spot.
Detroit has maintained a stance that they won’t sign-and-trade franchise center Jalen Duren. But key starter Tobias Harris is leaving the Pistons, unless he ultimately would want to return to Detroit on a very reduced salary.

I think they'll do something, but I think it will involve 1-2 trades with 1-2 of the veterans for younger players, not necessarily FA signings. 

It makes sense that teams interested in such deals would want to see how the bigger names play out first.

Lakers making big moves. Might be some overpays but in the end, all that matters is if they fit and play well. They're all young guys and can grow together. Obviously Luka was tired of waiting. I respect identifying guys and getting it done instead of waiting around for value.

Nothing has changed on this front so far. I guess we did get even more confirmation from Stein that the Sasser trade is basically a done deal on or around the 6th (NBA moratorium period ends).

The only UFA left that makes any sense at all is Anfernee Simons. A trade for Sasser isn't stopping me from adding a player like Simons. Although I don't think they should commit MLE ($15m) type money for multiple years.

It's safe to assume they will want to bring Cisse back?

I think trading Klay or reaching a buyout is likely.

I could see them waiving AJJ no matter what happens, to bring back Powell for the vibes.

This team is unlikely to be a good one in the W/L column, outside of a major trade we can't see, but I do think they'll be more entertaining to watch. Kyrie and Lively are the biggest X-factors when it comes to the 'injury bug'. Would it be too much to ask for them to have a semi-healthy season for Flagg's sake.

I'd include Toronto now unless Leonard gets suspended all season. I'd also add LA. I don't see them outside of the top 4 at the end of the season in the West. I don't consider them a true contender as I would only say SA and OKC in the West are true contenders in the West, but I typically call top 4 contenders. I can see Toronto going to the finals next year if they stay healthy and Leonard is in the playoffs.

Veteran Khris Middleton remains a possibility for one of those minimum contracts. Miami has respect for veteran point guard Gabe Vincent, who was on the Heat’s 2023 Finals team, but it’s undecided if the Heat will pursue this. Either way, adding another point guard remains a necessity.

I'm sure I'm not the first person to think about this, and it might have even been discussed already (if so, sorry), but Middleton's Bird rights are interesting to me this morning.

Is there anything of value in Miami that would be appropriate compensation for facilitating a deal at above the veteran minimum? I assume he wanted to stay here after the trade deadline in order to maintain his Bird rights, and the Mavs paid a high cost to grant that wish for him, so it sticks in my craw a bit that the world is suddenly assuming he's fine with taking the vet minimum. Maybe they have an exception he can be traded into for a 2nd or two, even?

Stuck with Gafford and PJ would piss me off, but some people think it's no big deal.  

John Collins is a PJ tiered forward/player and is now making 5 mil less per year.

Gafford is not that far off from Kessler and we see how much he’s getting paid. This should bode as a good omen for the trade Gafford folks.

Marc Stein says there is no expectation that the Mavericks will send out a player in the incoming Marcus Sasser trade. He would be absorbed into a trade exception

I will agree that the KESSLER deal makes me feel a bit better about Gafford's contract.

I was thinking about him as well.  Maybe minimum is all there is for him, but he wanted to hold on to his bird rights last year.   Maybe Miami is the #1 option, but I thought he looked pretty good last year.   Wouldn't he fit in with Detroit?  Denver?   And several other good teams.   He seems pretty prideful and even though he has made a ton of money I could see him wanting something more.   

Would you bring him back to Dallas?   With our roster now, I would say no unless there was some changes.
