Obviously pro and college are night and day but this is a great quote.  Relationships in the nba are a little more complex and difficult.  For toonlong though, I didn’t like how the mavs treated players.  Especially when they leave.  I think that will change.  The Nico/kidd run felt so cold how they talked about the players leaving.

From what I have heard from May is that he is a great communicator and really is clear in his conversations.  I also found it interesting that he thought even after signing 3 future lottery picks, that he thought the Michigan point guard was the most important signing as he would be able to get the ball to everyone.

I'm not really familiar with either of their track records, but I'll point out that the skillsets required to be a good head coach are much more extensive than what it takes to be a good assistant coach. That's when things like dealing with ownership, the media, managing egos, exuding professionalism and calm, etc, all take on supreme importance, I'd think. Plus, I think it's semi-safe to assume these two have already done the assistant coach thing at a standout level since they were both given the chance at one time to try their hand at the big seat. 

This isn't meant as support for either, necessarily, because I don't have strong feelings about them. I do think it's a good sign that all involved have identified high-level NBA coaching experience as something May will need at his side as he begins this new challenge. I was a little worried we'd start hearing about coaches coming with him from Michigan to take those seats.

When you are an assistant, how do you really assess their performance from the outside? Im not sure team performance sits on assistant coaches like it does head coaches in terms of what they bring. Think the assessment process is quite different, and requires internal insight.

All we have as fans are the facts that these coaches were rehired as assistants... and in some case were well thought-of enough as assistants to be interviewed for head coaching jobs. Even if they weren't initially successful as head coaches, they were highly regarded enough as assistants to be the right candidate for a head-coaching position.

Is there such a thing as a bad assistant coach? I've never heard of that term. Just asking. It's totally different from sitting in the 1st chair. Both played in the NBA, so they bring that aspect to the table.

I think having a former nba head coach for May will help. I don’t know much about either. Both didn’t work out as head coaches but the role of hc and Assitant coach are totally different.

Dusty May press conference today. It will be interesting if he mentions anyone besides Coop, kyrie and Johnson.

Masai and Schmitz have been available and friendly but have kept everything close to the vest with generic answers. Will be interesting if May mentions other players.

Poulakidas and Lawal seem a given for the two-way contracts. 3rd spot TBD or Ishchenko. I kind of expect Ishchenko and Cisse to sign standard NBA contracts.
