I assume this posture could change quickly once a new GM is hired.

Anyone know anything about this guy? Supposedly Masai interviewed him previously and he is now one of the best coaches in Europe. If you think Danny Hurley is high strung though…

Not much as a coach. He was a legendary PG in Europe. Literally won everything there is to win as a player and coach in Europe.

Saras is a legend in Europe, brillant mastermind PG (he played in NBA too) and coach.

But i don't think he fits the NBA basketball even at coaching.

He is strong and hard with players, not care about superstars.

I pass on him.

The Mavs have had “exploratory conversations” with both Michigan and Duke to determine if Dusty May and Jon Scheyer have any interest in the vacant coaching job, Marc Stein reports in his Substack.

Remains to be seen whether either would be interested, and the more realistic option is still going the NBA route for the new coach, Stein says.

LOTS of Maverick coaching updates from@TheSteinLine.

- Exploratory conversations have been had with Dusty May &Jon Scheyer

- Micah Nori & Royal Ivey are two notable assistants Dallas has/will register official interest in

The Mavericks will likely interview former assistant coach Terry Stotts for their head coaching vacancy, per @TheSteinLine

I’m gonna be a little annoyed if they hire Scheyer. Maybe he really is a great coach but it’s gonna seem like they just hired Flaggs college coach. Hurley is doing more with less talent.

Nothing against Stein who has a long history doing the job.  I never thought of him as a click bait guy and he puts in the work.  Although at this point, I am not really putting much stock in anything he says about the Mavs.  It feels like everyone is guessing now.   Someone will guess right but I don't put much stock into anyone now.

BTW off topic, but Masai may or may not win big here.  Time will tell.  Although over the past few weeks I have heard several executives interviewed from around the league.  I come away impressed with almost all of them.  How smart they are.  How strategic they are.   Patient when they need to be, aggressive when they need to be.   There are just so many smart, hard working executives.   On the other hand, I hear Cuban interviewed and you quickly realize how disadvantaged the Mavs have been compared to other teams.   The 2011 roster building was masterful.  Since then it has been mistake after mistake.   It is sort of impressive they have been pretty good with all the mistakes.  I guess hitting a franchise guy can hide a lot of things.    Cuban is none of the things I explained earlier.    Not only were they not good, there was a certain arrogance to them that also led to a lot of pissed off endings.    I am just so glad that era is behind us.  Whether we win again is another story.

Once Cuban was pushed out, Stein lost his source. He's a good reporter so I don't doubt that he'll build it back up with the new MBT. Right now, he's been a lot more miss than hit lately... but I still like him most out of all the Mavs reporters.

I'm certainly not an expert, but Hurley seems pretty harsh. Not sure how he'd fare dealing with pro players.

A great front office would have built a championship team around Luka and Jalen - they love each other by the way, there wasn’t any rivalry trouble.

Just imagine the Knicks but exchange Towns for Luka - and have three tough, gritty and athletic defenders around them that are efficient on offense, but don’t want or need the ball.

Luckily we got the new regime in only the second year of Flagg, so enough opportunities and time to get it right this time!

The Stein Line has also been advised that former Trail Blazers, Bucks and Hawks coach Terry Stotts — who previously had a stint in Dallas as an assistant and was once recommended strongly for Kidd's staff by former majority owner Mark Cuban — is also certain to get an interview for the position. Yet the more realistic outcome for Dallas remains hiring someone from within the NBA and, to that end, sources say that the Mavericks have either already registered official interest or plan to do so with a number of prominent assistant coaches. Those include Minnesota's Micah Nori, Houston's Royal Ivey, Toronto's Jama Mahlalela, Boston's Tony Dobbins and Miami consultant Noah LaRoche.

I like Terry Stotts - at one point I liked him quite a bit. He doesn't jump out as a particularly inspired choice for a team in the Mavericks' current situation, at least not immediately.

I will continue to hope for Nick Nurse, despite no evidence that either he or the team is the least bit interested in one another, so far.

I don’t see Stotts. I mean I expect someone in the lower 40’s who can grow with this team. Stotts is 68.

I wonder if he could be an assistant though? Give him a promotion and help with a younger coach?

Does anyone know what happened with Sweeney? So many rumors and betting odds linking the Mavs and then he is hired by Orlando, and poof, nothing. Were the Mavs even interested? Late to the game? Just seems like kinda a big miss with the dearth of good coaches. I had Sweeney far and above anyone else available.

I seriously doubt they hire Stotts, but when I heard his name mentioned as a candidate, a little bit of the air came out of my balloon.

Stotts is a capable Coach for sure, but he is too old and too lame for our current situation. Does not seem like a Ujiri-hire AT ALL. So I am sure this is not going to happen.

Mavs were not interested.  Sweeney would've taken this job in an instant.

As to who exactly Masai is interested in, seems like no one knows.

This.

If Sweeney signed for the Magic so Masai had already fold him.

Minnesota Timberwolves assistant coach Micah Nori, regarded as one of the most coveted names on this year’s head coaching market, said he has had no contact with the Dallas Mavericks about their vacancy. Nori addressed the Mavericks’ opening along with other searches around the league during an appearance on SiriusXM’s NBA Radio on Tuesday. “I mean, I haven’t heard anything really from Dallas,” Nori said.

Just like if Presti left OKC for Dallas, I would have lost some respect for him.   I think the same of Scheyer.  I think he has a chance to be very good.  Although, Duke is his dream job.  It wouldn't make sense for him to leave now just three years in.   He hasn't won a title yet either.  Maybe in 10 years.

I don't know much about Dusty May.   Good sign that he had a team jell fast with mostly transfers.   Mara and Johnson are both transfers who went from no one talking about them in the first round to everyone talking about them.

If college is being considered, Hurley has to be your first call.  Maybe he tells you no way or maybe he is not your cup of tea, but he is the best coach in college.   In their game against Duke, it was awesome to see how they changed focus mid game to attack Duke.  The first half they were getting beat bad.  I was rooting for Duke, but that second half UCONN figured things out and came storming back.   He does those things all the time.   I don't expect he is the guy, but he should be a call if you are looking at college coaches.
