I thought Sweeney's specialty was offense. Under Kidd, Moseley was the D-coordinator and, I think, Sweeney did the offense. I could be wrong.

Read the article I shared - he‘s a defensive mastermind that gets all the credit from Wemby for the great improvement of the Spurs defense compared to last season, was able to challenge and engage Doncic defensively, so that he made him join the Slovenian national team to install his defensive system and is really close friends with Giannis, so close, that they get in their face regularly.

It also states that he was taking on more and more offensive tasks in Dallas.

Him being the head coach and Nash taking over the offense would be something! Or any other offensive mastermind, of course…

I think he is a GREAT coach.   The more I think about it though, I don't think the fit is right now.   Hurley has a ton of power at UCONN.  He is pretty much their coach and GM.    I am not sure how he handles with more powerful people above him.   Second, I think the Mavs are looking 5 years out.  They want to pick a coach who will grow with the team and when they are good again that coach has gone thru the ups and downs with the team now.    I am not sure you can do that with Hurley.

With that being said, I think it would be an awesome hire.  I am just expecting someone more low profile.

We know they want the Duke coach, is he a low profile? He isn't Hurley but he is young and highly rated one.

My opinion is that his frenetic, emotional style would quickly wear on professionals.  

Reminds me a bit of the rah-rah college football coach who tries to move to the NFL, and his schtick gets old after a couple of years.

It was between Duke and UConn.  I believe Duke was always the favorite but I thought I heard and interview where Hurley thought he had him and was hit with a gut punch when he chose Duke.

Interestingly, we seem to have stumbled into an era of gushing love around here between our contributors and the new Mavs front office. I'm not knocking it - I'm excited about them, too. However, I've never really seen this community so united in trust that the Mavs know what they're doing, and it will be interesting to see how long that lasts.

No worries, we‘ll find reasons to fight each other again soon.

Killer: Every honeymoon will fade. No front office guy is permanent. As I said on another thread, even Masai was forced out in Tor. However, this is the first time in decades that I feel we have a front office team that is universally acknowledged as solid. Maybe they are not better than Presti or Connelly, but we didn't have a chance to get them anyway. The Mavs did try for Connelly.

If an organization hires one of the best that is out there, then as a fan I'm ready to live with the results. The results might not be favorable and they might be removed at some point, but even if Masai and Schmitz flame out, at least one can't say that the Mavs wasted Coop's timeline by hiring incompetent, learning on the job, type of guys.
