Jason Kidd OUT! Who will be the Mavs' next HC?
(05-22-2026, 03:32 PM)RasheedsBigWhiteSpot Wrote: I thought Sweeney's specialty was offense. Under Kidd, Moseley was the D-coordinator and, I think, Sweeney did the offense. I could be wrong.

Read the article I shared - he‘s a defensive mastermind that gets all the credit from Wemby for the great improvement of the Spurs defense compared to last season, was able to challenge and engage Doncic defensively, so that he made him join the Slovenian national team to install his defensive system and is really close friends with Giannis, so close, that they get in their face regularly.

It also states that he was taking on more and more offensive tasks in Dallas.

Him being the head coach and Nash taking over the offense would be something! Or any other offensive mastermind, of course…

Dan Hurley on what it would take for him to coach in the NBA

I think he is a GREAT coach.   The more I think about it though, I don't think the fit is right now.   Hurley has a ton of power at UCONN.  He is pretty much their coach and GM.    I am not sure how he handles with more powerful people above him.   Second, I think the Mavs are looking 5 years out.  They want to pick a coach who will grow with the team and when they are good again that coach has gone thru the ups and downs with the team now.    I am not sure you can do that with Hurley.

With that being said, I think it would be an awesome hire.  I am just expecting someone more low profile.

We know they want the Duke coach, is he a low profile? He isn't Hurley but he is young and highly rated one.
Not saying he is the top pick, but there were reports of him being a candidate
I don't think they care that much about the profile tbh.

My opinion is that his frenetic, emotional style would quickly wear on professionals.

Reminds me a bit of the rah-rah college football coach who tries to move to the NFL, and his schtick gets old after a couple of years.

It's a long season.

^ I would agree except Cooper Flagg seems like a guy that is also a psycho about basketball and they might hit it off. Although I have to wonder if Hurley tried to recruit him to UConn and how that went.

It was between Duke and UConn.  I believe Duke was always the favorite but I thought I heard and interview where Hurley thought he had him and was hit with a gut punch when he chose Duke.

Interestingly, we seem to have stumbled into an era of gushing love around here between our contributors and the new Mavs front office. I'm not knocking it - I'm excited about them, too. However, I've never really seen this community so united in trust that the Mavs know what they're doing, and it will be interesting to see how long that lasts.

No worries, we‘ll find reasons to fight each other again soon.

But I would immediately sign off on having discussions about things two or three levels smaller than we had to in the last years, because that means we’d be on track in the bigger picture!

That is why Masai is going to draft Nate Ament to help things return to their normal state.

No to Hurley. Some personalities are perfectly suited for the college game. He needs to stay there.

Killer: Every honeymoon will fade. No front office guy is permanent. As I said on another thread, even Masai was forced out in Tor. However, this is the first time in decades that I feel we have a front office team that is universally acknowledged as solid. Maybe they are not better than Presti or Connelly, but we didn't have a chance to get them anyway. The Mavs did try for Connelly.

If an organization hires one of the best that is out there, then as a fan I'm ready to live with the results. The results might not be favorable and they might be removed at some point, but even if Masai and Schmitz flame out, at least one can't say that the Mavs wasted Coop's timeline by hiring incompetent, learning on the job, type of guys.

Yep.

Just what the Sixers did with Darryl Morey.

Hurley has already acknowledged his own strengths and weaknesses. Not sure why he is still being discussed.

Quote:The Philadelphia 76ers are not expected to grant the Mavericks permission to interview Nick Nurse, per
@BrettSiegelNBA
“While he was with the Toronto Raptors, Ujiri was never afraid to target assistant coaches or first-time head coaches, as he did with Nick Nurse and Darko Rajakovic. Speaking of Nurse, some have mentioned his name as an intriguing candidate in Dallas, but the Philadelphia 76ers are not prepared to grant the Mavs permission to speak with their head coach should they reach out, sources said.”
