Cooper Flagg was asked if Jason Kidd has given him any assurance that he'll be his coach amid the speculation about him leaving for the #Knicks job: "No, I haven't had those conversations yet at all. But I think talking with Coach Kidd, my workout & even after I got picked, I was on the phone with him for a minute. I think he's just excited. He has a good vision for me for what I can do & how I can impact the game. So I'm excited to just talk to him more."

I want to believe Kidd is committed to staying here but something about that situation seems fishy. Could just be the East Coast bias in the media but Quinn Snyder and Ime Udoka supposedly got big extensions. No new deal for Kidd. Meanwhile, he's reportedly losing Sweeney, Dudley, and Shamgod.

It doesn’t matter who you would get in some theoretical trade using PJ and/or Gafford and draft capital, this team isn’t competing for anything without a fully healthy Kyrie, full stop. Also, why use your best assets trading for a stop gap solution when you have a more prudent option. If there is a player that can be a stop gap AND play next to Kyrie then sure but those players are few and far between. I feel like everyone has assumed we HAD to breakup the frontcourt to address the needs in the backcourt and now because of some good cap management there is an opportunity to address is differently and keep all the talent in the frontcourt and see what it actually looks like before making a decision. What if Flagg turns out to be a great creator and all of the sudden it looks like we should be moving our assets for some great POA defender to slot between Kyrie and Flagg instead of another creator? We have a chance to find that out now. Rarely disagree with Bobby but he’s being very disingenuous with the idea that we’re being cheap at PG. we literally just committed 120 mil to our actual PG, he just happens to be hurt which sucks. He was literally talking about how shitty it is going to be to trade for a guard because we would be coming from a position of desperation but now we have leverage but it seems like he still wants us to make a desperation move, just feels a little hypocritical. DLo can certainly be a basketball terrorist and I’m going to get really annoyed a lot watching him but I just sat through a season where our leading minute getting was Spencer Dinwiddie so it can’t be much worse. But more importantly I’ll be ok putting up with it knowing we did this instead of burning our best assets on like a 5 month rental. Will we probably trade PJ/Gafford for backcourt help but there’s no rush really from where I’m sitting. ![]() • F Gump, From Dirk to SCREW YOU Nico, Smitty

I don't have a lot of expectations for next year. I'd rather have DLo as a free agent than spend assets on Sexton. I think we all know what DLo is so I'm not expecting surprises. And I don't take his lows in LA to be the player he is as he'll do better when he's the guy and has a more clearly defined role.

Sorry if this has been posted.
It appears that Jason Kidd will be staying with the Mavericks. Despite reports suggesting Kidd and the Knicks had “mutual intrigue,” Mavs president Nico Harrison confirmed in a post-draft press conference that he does not intend to let that happen. “Is that still out there about J. Kidd? I thought I shut that down,” he said, as relayed by Dallas Morning News writer Brad Townsend (Twitter link). “He will be the coach next year,” Harrison continued.

Now that Cooper is a Mav, there’s a lot of work to do. The roster is talented but bloated with a lot of random pieces that don’t fit together. Three non shooting bigs, a log jam at power forward, Nico talking about PJ basically playing the small forward position he sucks at (he’s a power forward only), Flagg out of position in the backcourt (he’s a 4 too), Klay as a progress stopper who can’t defend anymore, Naji as third team even though he’s the best currently healthy playmaker pending Flagg’s ascension, and that doesn't even get at the point guard problems. The team is just a collection of talent right now. There’s enough talent to win a title, but it’s a hot mess. These aren’t the right guys. The Mavs need to start by prioritizing a roster that puts at least four good three point shooters on the floor, can protect the paint, defend the point of attack, and break down the other team’s defense off the dribble. Time to make some deals.

I thought it was fine. Nico is just a little awkward in this setting. If you are already pre-disposed to disliking him, you are going to find fault in everything he says. One thing he said, that I've not seen elsewhere leads me to expect PJ will be retained. Nico talked about having a very good week working with our guy(S) and will have announcement(S) when we are allowed to. The way it was said, it was clearly more than just Gafford's extension. As to free agency, they do expect to put the ball in Flagg's hands some (but running the offense will be by committee). The goal is to get someone to help bridge the gap while Kyrie is out. They don't need someone to run the offense. Just someone to get us organized. I know Stein has pretty well landed on D-Lo for us. I'm not sure that description from Nico necessarily fits D-Lo. He thinks we'll have our choice. ![]() • ballsrchr, Chicagojk, DallasMaverick, F Gump, From Dirk to SCREW YOU Nico, KillerLeft, Reunion Mav, SleepingHero, Smitty, Winter

It just maintains flexibility and allows them to be patient. A need now, may not be a need in a year from now. Vice versa too. I am really hoping for old man Paul. I was not crazy with him signing with the Spurs last year but he was fine. I think you can start him, play him 22-24 minutes and just let him organize things. I understand he wants to be back in LAL, but Dallas needs to be intriguing. Potentially good team and a starting gig.
Did anyone see Mark Aguirre crying last night? That was pretty cool. He seemed really moved.
Has anyone dived on on the Dallas Wings? I was thinking of starting to get involved in the WNBA. Just not a lot of time left over though. I saw Paige there last night as well.

Also, regardless of whether or not you think the team "needed some space", the return was embarssingly bad and that alone would have gotten most GMs fired. I disagree with most of your response because it ignores the context around the situations. Brunson was drafted by Donnie, in the same draft as Luka, who gave him the contract that included no bird rights at the end (why??). Even mid-season 21/22 there was disagreement on trading or extending him. By the time NYKs had hired his dad and meddled pre-FA (for which they lost a SRP this year), it became obvious he'd never get out of Luka's shadow in DAL, there wasn't much left to save. Nobody was complaining about draft picks, a lot of which were swaps, once it became apparent that PJW and Gaff were the answer to a lot of team issues. I think he could have gotten more for Luka, but you can argue that AD himself represents 2-3 FRPs in value. I do think that trading Grimes + PHL's high SRP was a bone headed, knee jerk decision, then failing to take the out when Martin's true injury status was revealed made it even more head scratching. Dammit. I said I didn't want to be a Nico defender. I am still sore about the Luka thing and I will always hold the clandestine nature of the deal against him. It would have been so much better to find a way to help motivate him to get better, but I get not wanting to commit to another $350MM while waiting on him to come around. Flame me or not. I'm not saying anything more on Nico.

Without a trade, I would like to bring back Exum. Paul/Exum/Williams may be able to hold the fort down for the first few months. Powell- expiring Omax- going into the last year. Has a team option Hardy- 12 million dollars coming to him but has had some moments Martin- Has produced in the playoffs but also has years left on his contract. In all honesty, siging the TPMLE and finding a way to open a space for Exum (if no trade) would be fine. Gives them a deep team who can be selective how they want to upgrade their team when the right move presents itself.
Paul/Exum/Williams would probably the best case scenario for me. D'angelo and Brogdon both have more warts.
If we're talking about cutting a player outright, Powell makes the most sense. His position is filled with players who need minutes. All the others mentioned seemed tradeable to me and may be useful in that capacity. |
