Paul and a trade for Lonzo would also be nice, if allowable.

I'll say this: Russell might be the best choice to give options for playing WITH Kyrie late season, if we get that far. I still prefer Kyrie off-ball (meaning Paul would be better on offense), but size-wise...Russell spacing off-ball makes a ton of sense at that point.

Just sayin'. @YossiGozlan The Dallas Mavericks are now under the second apron. Kyrie Irving declining his $43 million player option and re-signing for three years, $119 million can start him as low as $36.7 million. $28 million in savings, and can now aggregate salaries in trades.

I know we're all holding our breath for the next big mistake, but part of me wonders whether he and Luka just didn't see eye to eye and he was just temporarily insane for want of being out from under that. It kind of seems like he's calmly positioning things to have the most doors available to be opened going into the draft tomorrow night. Being able to aggregate salaries could be pretty significant over the next 24 hours. And, as you said, it's now possible to envision them passing on deals they don't like, because they will get SOMONE who can help with that exception if all else fails.

Now, there's sufficient leverage not to get fleeced on a Sexton deal if that's the way they want to go, just as an example. They have options that weren't there until just now.

@MavsFilmRoom
The Mavs have a lot organizational familiarity with D’Angelo Russell. Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, Jared Dudley, Andrew Baker, & Matt Riccardi all have worked with him in some capacity. Same with Spencer Dinwiddie, though I doubt he’d endorse his likely replacement lol

It would be a little like having THJ back, in some ways. When he's got it going, he helps a ton. I'm sure people here would get sick of him, but when he's good...

Everyone on the ‘target’ list has warts. I don’t expect a perfect player for $5M/yr. Just having someone that can dribble and set guys up is a need for this team. A lot of play finishers, not many play initiators…

About the 119M -- sometimes the leaked total includes incentives. If that has happened here, then the starting salary may be lower. I'm guessing that's NOT the case here, but it happened in the prior Kyrie deal.

I'd probably put him #2 on that list as long as it is a one year deal. He tends to overstay his welcome quickly. He's averaged 4.9 assists for his career and was on pace for a career high of 6.6 assists last year when he was getting minutes with Brooklyn. Defense is nice and all, even if I think he's a tad overrated in that regard, but I use assists as that's what this team needs. Probably can't have a Maxi Kleber fan appreciate night next year if we do sign him.

I think he said something about staying close to his kids though.

We can debate on who we need to take but the truth is there is bigger money out there that will go after some of these PG's and when that $$$ dries up enough, and what we have is appealing enough, then we will probably be fighting over the left overs.

Even at his advanced age, he could be a nice stop gap starter
