MAVS NEWS:
Flagg Davis Irving Thompson and Lively with Gafford and PJ off the bench then you have Williams Max and Naji that is a 10 player strong team as is. If healthy and playing well that team can go all the way. If Nico improves that and he will then it will become a stronger team. He has to trade off guys like Hardy Omax Powell and Martin to find others that service the teams needs then he is taking out the trash and turning it into more useful assets and I am hoping he can pull that off. He brought in bigs like Kai and Moses last season when the core was injured and they performed well enough to keep us in the play in. Brandon Williams was a find in the 2 way contract process. As many screw ups as he had he is looking like a genius now that he bet the Luka trade would work out and we would end up winning the first pick with the bonus being AD and Max are now here as well.

He is going to get his chance to rebuild the team because he is not getting fired this close to the draft. If things work out we may be stuck with him for a good long time. I see there being a lot of talent at the end of the 2nd round that could be available. If he is working on securing more 2 way contracts to offer to the remaining draft picks that he is farming, that influx of talent could solve our need to secure replacements for our aged vets. Davis Thompson and Irving are nearing their golden years and won't be here forever.

If Nico gets lucky and a major PG talent falls through the cracks and he gets them with a 2 way contract then he can keep the guys everyone is talking about trading and not trade off anyone for a temporary fill in behind Irving. We all know that money will dry up and some veteran PG will be left out there to take for a vet min.

We can just wait till then and get something better than a rookie and not need to make any trades at all. No matter what I am not trading Gafford or PJ till I see what we have and how the pieces fit together. TDL I may want to move assets but not till there is a proper evaluation of the team and its ability to play together with our new generational talent.

Only trades I want to see taking place are take out the trash kinds of trades.

Hardy and Omax not as much as Powell and Martin who are looking cashed. Hardy may develop into an asset we can sell for more at the TDL and OMax could come out hitting his 3's and look like a Siakam starter kit. You can gamble on them improving and sell them to the lower teir teams for picks.

As of late yesterday, was told Knicks hadn't asked permission, formally or informally, to interview Jason Kidd.

If it's NY that leaked to @TheSteinLine it intends to ask "in the coming days," it's an odd way to do business, sending a test balloon to see if it gets shot down.

Mavs bringing in Cam Reddish as well as Alondis Williams to that workout with several players including Dennis Smith Jr. Probably won't come to much but good for them for bringing players in. You never know what you will find. Probably no one will get a regular deal. Two way seems unlikely but maybe a chance to get more time to see if they can earn a two way. some may just be trying to get a summer league spot. Mavs should have a pretty good message for potential two way guys. Our training staff is so bad, there is a good chance you will get a lot of real nba games Smile. Although on the other hand, we may try to get you to play with a broken leg.

I think the book on Reddish has been written unfortunately. It just never happened. Williams went undrafted a few years ago after a pretty good season at Wake Forest. I believe he has been pretty good in the G league.

We got our core and top 10 guys to rotate in and out. We just need to find a few more third stringers. I was always jealous of the Spurs having a roster that stayed the same from year to year with Parker Gino and Timmy. Continuity is a very good thing if you ask me. The upheaval of constant change of roster personnel is disruptive and makes it hard to create a foundation to build your team on. Hopefully the team we build around Cooper is going to be stable and allow a team to develop in a way where the roster is balanced and not always in need of something else.

From Stein:

"Flagg is scheduled to be hosted in town by his future team later this month for some get-to-know-you-time before the draft on June 25, when the Mavericks will select the Duke star with the No. 1 overall pick."

and this on Kidd

"... Dallas, though, can simply refuse to grant the Knicks permission to speak with Kidd once formally asked and I've heard from a few well-placed observers this week who believe that the Mavericks would ultimately do just that — just as the Rockets have made it clear they plan to do if the Knicks indeed tried to pursue Ime Udoka.

Cliff Notes : Flagg isn't getting traded, and Kidd, I'm thinking, is unlikely to interview with Knicks.

No surprises that the Mavs would deny the request, but I think it all comes down to Kidd. What happens if he goes to Nico and asks for permission to be allowed? No one wants a disgruntled coach on their hands. The whole point of NY leaking their interest in Kidd is probably to make this happen.

Several beat writers have made the astute observation about how weird it is that every rumor about the Knicks coaching vacancy only includes coaches under contract. Smile

They almost certainly are pissing other organizations off with these rumors (Minnesota, Dallas and Houston)

If lose Kidd is the first step then it's ok for me, we are the clown of the league after last year.
No Flagg can fix it. Clean the house ASAP.

So, to summarize:

Your position is that we should throw the Kidd out with the bathwater?

Brillant.  Big Grin

If Harrison, street clothes and Dumont are the bathwater for you then yes! Of course!

They had continuity because they got those guys when they were young.  I agree that continuiity is great if you've got a group of young players that work well together.  There's no continuity to be found with AD, KI, and Klay as most of your core.

Cooper Flagg plans to have a private visit with the Mavericks in Dallas on June 17, sources tell ESPN. One week after his first official Mavs visit, Flagg is set to be Dallas' No. 1 pick in the NBA draft on June 25.

True but then the education of playing with 3 older all star level talents is something most rookie of the year types never get a chance to experience and to that extent Cooper is blessed. He and Lively will be the core of the next team when we see Ky Klay and AD call it quits or get traded or whatever fate has in store.

Having a star PF/ SF and a 5 to build around is a good start. I would assume that in the ending of the old regime the mavs may take matters to acquire picks and build around the draft or if trades matter more then that will be their modus operandi. PJ Gafford B Will Max and perhaps Naji who I pray improves his 3 a good deal will still be a part of the team and hopefully healthy and better developed. Maybe we don't trade of Omax and he is there to.

So you would have
Lively Gafford
Cooper PJ
Naji Omax
Max
B Will

That leaves us 2 holes to fill at PG, 2 at the SG and 5 3rd stringers to work in.

I assume that we are still adding more talent to the team this offseason and we should develop 3 players on 2 way deals.

Probably we are going to add another PG.

Assuming every other year we go to the WCF then this year we might do that so maybe someone out there in free agency is hungry to participate in that effort and they see our opening as an opportunity to be the final cog in a championship run. Irving can still recruit and sell someone on joining up. There are a lot of guys that can play among the undrafted this year. Maybe a PG that can hit 3's and dish will drop in our lap. We have LA's first rounder and they still have an aging 40 year old Lebron and nothing at the 5. Perhaps Luka is seeing that situation and thinking that he needs to ditch LA if they fail to materialize a better line up certainly that pick would be a lot better when they self destruct. LA blows things up we could take advantage.

Some team is going to blow things up there are just to many over paid all stars that teams are going to want to jetison at the TDL. We can continue to gamble and get lucky on young players every off season while we still have our veterans and with luck we add another PG or a big perhaps. Parker was picked late in the draft at 28 as I recall. Kai Jones is young still and so is Moses Brown.

late in this draft there are some guys with size that dish and get assists.

Look at the assists these guys are getting
https://www.tankathon.com/players/kobe-sanders 4.5 or 5.1/36 mins
https://www.tankathon.com/players/micah-peavy 3.6 or 3.5/36 mins

Smaller options:
https://www.tankathon.com/players/ryan-nembhard small but gets 9.8 or 10.1/36 mins
https://www.tankathon.com/players/javon-small 5.6 apg at around 36 mins a game.

Maybe a one year deal with a vet free agent that wants to make good and get paid. I personally would focus on Coby White and selling the Bulls on something they need more. The mock I looked at said they will be getting Derick Queen at 12 and they have 6'8" Giddey already at PG.  They have Vuc at the 5 but maybe Queen is a better option there and Buzelis at the 4 or 3 makes sense.

I used a trade checker sending Martin, Hardy and Naji for Lonzo and Coby and it said success. Now you got 2 PG's to try and you can trade one if needed. Lonzo is a dump so we take his bad deal on and then they give us Coby. Naji is a stud on D and has that scoring talent to lead a team when the real stars are down and injured. I will miss him but you got to give to get and Hardy and Martin are both threats from 3 and Hardy is still showing signs he can turn it up another notch with more consistant play time. Martin just needs to find the time to fit in and he is rotation piece. If I am not giving up enough then maybe we throw in a future 2nd round pick.

I read something yesterday that Nellie said Paul Pierce was his favorite player in that draft but he had to hold his promise to Donnie to draft Dirk. Both great players, but I would think the Mavs franchise would have looked much different without Dirk.

BTW, Donnie probably had to go. It was time. He had some duds. But on his resume, he can list Dirk, Luka, Brunson, and supposedly pushing for Giannis. Not bad. I wonder if he is done in the NBA or if he would ever want to get back into the grind. I would think some fanbases would overlook his mistakes if you could list those four names above.

Don Nelson says the Mavs made a tremendous mistake trading Luka.

I want to agree with this statement, but I remember Luka's rookie year and getting frozen out by Matthews, Jordan and Barnes. I remember him "high 5-ing" himself during a timeout when nobody responded. Hope it's different for Flagg with Kyrie, Klay and AD.
