Poll: How long before fans' emotions return to normal?
#1
Right now, most fans are reacting out of pure emotion:

The sky is falling.

I hope Luka exceeds all expectations and shows Nico for the terrorist he is.

I don't care about the team anymore, and I'll never watch again.

My life is a failure and I have no purpose.

Since they've made this colossal blunder, they should just go ahead and completely destroy the team.

Every move that the Mavs have ever made is the worst possible. There's no hope.

...stuff like that.

So, realistically, how long will it be before emotions subside and rationality kicks back in?

How can anyone just move on a game, heck even a champions ship, after the GM, who already said he’s not sticking around, trades away arguably the most talented player this franchise has ever seen to an in conference rival for pennies on the dollar?

This was a finals level team. The talent was there. The team worked. Everything made sense on paper.

Luka didn’t want to leave man.

This was a betrayal of everything.

Going to put my mod hat on and edit this message.

I know we’re all hurt. I am right there with you, but let’s refrain from tearing ourselves down and focus our ire on the dude who made this situation happen. -SH

I think you are confused regarding the impact of a GM completely nuking a team.  The "fans" will never fully recover because the fanbase has been significantly altered.  There will a non negligible number of fans that will not root for this team again.

You ask when rationality sets in, but its actually a very rational response to evaluate the situation and decide its no longer worth putting the time and emotion into rooting for a team that appears to have little interest in winning and clearly stated it has no interest in the future.

Things will return to normal once Nico is run out of Dallas and the Mavs have a future again. Not expecting it any time soon.

I tormented the forum with complaints about Cuban nuking the championship team for years.

I'm realizing that I've always been a slow burn guy. In the first weeks after Cuban nuked the championship team, I argued with Killer about whether it was "all that bad." Once I had time to sit with it and realize that it was that bad, I became "the negative guy (as labeled by others) on the forum for years.

Anyway, continuing to process this through the lends of previous Mavs heartache.

That could take a while!

Amazingly, many of us that are still around have been on some version of this forum for a long, long time. We've outlasted multiple GMs, owners and so many coaches. So maybe we'll be here when we have another hero.

Of course, I probably only have three to four decades left, max, so maybe not for me.

Grief is a very real thing and coming to the final stage is doable but the time varies tremendously from person to person. This is not the highest level of grief of course like losing a child or a spouse etc. But trust me this recovery will involve stages and time to return to the wonderful feeling of having Luka to replace Dirk. Right now this hurts tremendously.

I have loved the Mavs since 1981. I know from my history I won’t stop having them as a positive and important part of my life. But losing Luka…. this is adding to grief events I was already dealing with.

If Mavs fans rushed the capitol, or Nico's office, and installed a new leader, who should it be?

I vote we have a three headed GM made up of Killer, Gump and Dan.

Killer can be the face. Gump and Dan are in the background crunching the numbers and feeding Killer data.

How bout it?

I think there’s an unwritten law in Dallas that all sports franchises can’t have measured, rational, smart leadership. So there’s no way the Mavs would be allowed to have such a triumvirate.

But I am curious, if the fans revolted and stormed the Mavs offices, would that undo the trade? The Adelsons would have to quell the fans right?

New GM/Ownership and maybe a new team if the Mavericks become the new Supersonics.

Nail on the head. The poll definitely should have had that as an option.

I no longer live in DFW (haven't for 26 years), but if one of those two things happen, I might saddle back up with the Dallas NBA franchise.

I have a really great idea. How about the casino people that own the Mavs keep the franchise and change the name, to the Dallas Hold'ems, Roulettes, or Craps or something. Then, we all pool our piggy banks and start a new Mavs franchise, in....

FORT WORTH!!!!!

Dallas is fake wild west anyway. Draw a line from Denton down through UTA and that's where the west starts. Come on pals. Migrate. FW is the place to be!

Dickies Arena is waiting!

Seems like it took a couple of weeks for most.

Or maybe it was 4 wins.

I have no problem moving on from here.

I'm disappointed Luka is gone, but I like the current Mavericks. I like the style of play.

I'm not rooting for Luka or the Lakers, and I have no idea how I will feel about this trade in five years. I have to admit that Nico Harrison probably knows more about basketball than I do. He has a team to manage and owners to answer to. The trade for AD was in direct contradiction to the fan base of which I'm a part. I hated seeing Luka go.

But I have seen five games since then, and I'm still a Mavericks fan. I like the current team. The rest of this I'm just going to put in my rear-view mirror.

Same, I'm not even watching games right now. I might if AD ever comes back and if they are still in the playoff hunt. I've pretty much lost all interest since the trade and especially since AD got hurt.
