AROUND the NBA:
Rockets headed to the Cup semi's vs OKC, beating GS 91-90 in a controversial ending. Houston ends a 16 game losing streak vs GS.

Not a fan of that call at the end of the GS-Houston game. Looked like a garden variety jump-ball situation, that the refs called a foul on GS. Ruined a hard-fought game.

HOU is trouble. Tari and Amen are a heck of a defensive duo.

76ers: Joel Embiid suffered a sinus fracture in tonight’s game vs. Indiana. He will be further evaluated this weekend.

@InStreetClothes
This marks the 3rd facial fracture of Embiid's career. He suffered a left orbital fracture in 2018 & a right orbital fracture in 2022. The 1st injury required surgery & he went on to miss 22 days (10 games). The 2022 injury cost him 2 postseason games over the course of 8 days.

NBA ratings are down 48% since 2012. Down 28% this year alone on ESPN. Every other sports league is setting ratings records.

I guess I'm not an outlier after all.

The regular season is meaningless.  It's mainly a soap opera for men, crafted by people like Kendrick Perkins.  All I see is fans argue about tweets.

Star players miss more games than ever before.  Buy tickets for/tune in for any big matchup and there's a >50% chance one of the stars won't be playing.

As a Mavs fan, I can't even get the games on Youtube TV or FUBO.  And guess what?  I don't even care.  I know the playoff games will be on TV.  These games right now don't really matter much anyway.

Ratings are down because everyone runs up.and down the court, and shoots 3's. There's no method to the madness. Some of the shots teams take are bad shots, period.

Agree with all of this and have no desire to hear from Stephen A. or Kendrick Perkins. They suck the energy out of the room. Even the TNT pre and post games have gotten stale because Shaq is kinda boring imo. The women have way better energy.

Dennis Schroeder traded to GS for DeAnthony Melton and a 2nd round pick. GS is sending 3 2nds to Brooklyn also.

Jared McCain informed Sixers staffers of left knee soreness following last night’s game vs. Indiana, sources said.

An MRI today revealed a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee. The injury requires surgery, and he is out indefinitely.

What a season for Philly. Just blew up almost immediately.

According to tankathon we’ll have their 2nd round pick next summer. Should end up being a pretty good one.

I wonder how the EU numbers look like. NBA League pass killed almost all oportunities to buy / extend a "cheap" pass from (kind of) 3rd world countries via vpn (eq Türkyie) for this season and forced all abonements into the regular pricing. Price went from ~40 USD to 200 USD so everybody i know canceled their subscription. Just not worth it if you only able to watch a handfull of games because of the timezones. You are better off creating a 7 day testaccount here and there.

The NBA is the only major league in America that actively makes it as difficult as possible to watch their games.

Adam Silver as a commissioner has failed every which way. I'm shocked he hasn't been ousted, but I suppose he has generated record breaking revenue for the owners.

Eek.  I usually agree with you.  IMO, Silver has been an outstanding commissioner.

Viewership is down everywhere.  Most households have "cable tv" as one of many choices.

I respectfully disagree. Silver has led the league to catastrophic viewership rates. Has allowed the league to become politicized, which inherently divides the viewership. And I have zero critiques about the actual politics regarding it.  But like Michael Jordan said, republicans buy sneakers too, and Silver has polarized his viewership. I don’t think that’s the main reason why viewership is down, but it is up there.

Then he’s bastardized the history of the league by allowing ads on jerseys. All so these rich owners could get a few extra million which in comparison is chump change for eye sores on jerseys. He then allowed ads to be shown DURING the game while free throws were taken!!

And his most grave sin, was allowing gambling to enter the league. It’s so ridiculous that every single place you look, the league is promoting gambling. It’s so pervasive that players are saying it’s affecting them and we’ve already had a lifetime ban from a player betting on himself.

He’s a bad commissioner every way I see it. But he’s made the owners a lot of money so he’s kept around.

Completely respect your opinion, but...

Politics... If politics shouldn't be part of the game, why the National Anthem?  Among the second verse "No refuge could save the hireling and slave / From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave".  If singing a song which contains lines about terrorizing slaves so they don't flee isn't "political" (160 years too late), I'm not sure what is.

I'm also a soccer fan, so the ads on jerseys my response to was "about time".

Gambling... to me that's like people thinking certain crimes are up (that aren't) simply because it's covered more.  I lived in NOLA during the point shaving scandal.  Where gambling is dangerous is when you leave it in the dark.

How can he be a bad commissioner every way, but made the owners a lot of money?  ie more revenue...   from fans???

That’s totally fine and I appreciate your perspective regarding the politics viewpoint. I don’t think it’s the main reason why viewership is down, but I think it should be mentioned in terms of gaffs.

I think the national anthem isn’t political, as it’s a foundational thing that all Americans, regardless of party, are represented in and are apart of. Whether other Americans believe that or not is an entirely separate issue and a different conversation. I don’t care to debate politics at all. My main issue bringing it up was that as commissioner, Silver potentially polarized his viewership and ostracized close to half the country.

Soccer has ads on jerseys because there are zero ad breaks for 45 mins at a time. Just a 15 min halftime break where it’s usually commentary about the 1st half. So in lieu of commercial breaks, there are ads on jerseys. That I understand. But the NBA is the furthest thing from that. We have a 3-5 minute ad break every 4-5 mins of game time. On top of in game ads, on top on ads on jerseys, on top of ads on courts. It’s ridiculous.

In regards to gambling, I don’t care if people do it. I’m fine if Vegas allows people to bet on the league. What I don’t like is representatives and stewards of the league actively promoting gambling. I don’t need the Mavs saying they are partnering up with Fanduel for free bets. I don’t like Barkley giving me his parlay bets. It’s annoying. Leave that out of it.

And I suppose I should frame it as, Adam silver is a horrible commissioner for me, the consumer. He’s made it hard for me to watch the game. He’s diluted the product. He’s polarized the product. But at the same time, he’s made his bosses a boatload of money. But at what cost? Well we see it in the viewership numbers.
