MAVS NEWS:
(10-07-2024, 10:50 AM)michaeltex Wrote:   But is there a case for moving Kyrie to the 6th man spot instead of Klay, and getting one of Marshall or Grimes in the starting rotation?

Neither Klay nor Kyrie are being considered for a 6th man role - both are starters, and there's been no conversation otherwise.

To me it would make more sense if one of them became 6th man, but it doesn't look like that's happening.

I been saying this from the day we got Klay too.

With each player's individual characteristics, Coach Kidd needs to look at his lineup like so:
  • Offensive Guard (Kyrie, Klay)
  • Defensive Guard (Grimes, Naji)
  • Offensive Forward (Luka, Klay)
  • Defensive Forward (PJW, Naji)
  • Center (Lively, Gafford)
That is 8 players for the final playoff rotation. There are enough minutes for everyone, and none need be over-used in the regular season.

The others can be used when these 8 aren't available.
  • Spencer and Hardy step in for Kyrie, Klay or Luka.
  • Exum steps in for Grimes.
  • Kessler and O-Max steps in for Naji and PJW.
  • Kleber steps in for Lively or Gafford.
Hopefully Dwight and Morris are DNPs.

Totally agree, but things like that have a way of changing over time. If it works, it works, but if it doesn't...

I don‘t care too much who starts - but who finishes in a tightly contested, clutch game? Is it dependent on the opponent or do we have our closing line-up for every match-up? Will Klay only stay on the court when he‘s hot or do we trust him to hit the big ones even when he‘s 2 of 13? Do we go small with PJ and Naji next to our three superstars with the benefit of better foul shooting? Or do we try to change players from offense to defense whenever possible? Questions over questions, really looking forward to the season!

The Mavericks announce that CEO Cynthia Marshall, who in March 2018 became the first Black female CEO in NBA history, is retiring at year’s end and will serve as a team consultant through December 2025. Marshall turns 65 in December.

Interesting. I was under the impression he still had two way options after thinking this had expired after the season. Can they still bring him back?

IMO, he was given enough time. Nice player, probably just a notch below or one of many guys good enough for the NBA but where there are not enough spots available. Maybe Dallas saw enough with one of their younger guys in camp already?

Had to come just to make space for Morris on the regular season roster, right? So I don’t think it’s because one of our young talents will get a roster spot. They are competing for the two-way contracts I guess.

There's a weird rule when it comes to 2-way's that actually has me confused:

https://cbabreakdown.com/contract-types/
Quote:A Two-Way Contract cannot be signed by a player that has (or may have during its term) 4 or more years of service (for example, a player with 3 years of service cannot sign a 2-year Two-Way Contract).  Nor can a player sign a Two-Way Contract that would result in the player being under a Two-Way Contract for any part of more than 3 seasons with the same team (for example, a player that just completed a 2-year Two-Way Contract cannot then sign another 2-year Two-Way Contract with that team).

Lawson has already 2 years of qualified service with the Mavs under a 2-way contract. So is he eligible for 1 more year with a 2-way? Or has his eligibility ran up (as in only up-to 3 years).

He still has 2 years of 2-way eligibility left with any other team not named the Mavs.

I couldn’t watch game last night, but saw highlights of Gortman. My first thought after seeing him was that AJ’s days were numbered (if he was still in fact eligible for a 2 way).  Wonder if Gortman’s performance had anything to do with the move?

No, because Lawson was on a regular contract. Waiving him was coming after they agreed to bring Morris back, he gets roster spot number 15.

We have only two out of three possible two-way contracts at the moment, with Kessler Edwards and Brandon Williams.

So Gortman, Sharpe and Miller are playing for the third one, if two of them outplay for example Williams he could still get waived. If all of them suck we could get someone from another roster.

Kidd on the waiving of AJ Lawson: “AJ has been great for us…We wish him the best of luck. When you look at the athleticism, the way that he has improved…He did everything we asked. There was a big jump in his game, but looking at the numbers, management had to make a decision.”

Williams is interesting.  Tore up the G-league, was not great in summer league but missed most of it with an injury.    If Gortman gets the last two way spot, do you really need to keep a second PG with Williams on a two way?  Williams is about to be 25 next month.

The 2-way rules keep evolving so they are confusing, and were significantly altered during Covid year on the fly. So it's been hard to follow what are the actual rules. Unfortunately the CBA FAQ is still not updated to the 2023 CBA (not sure what's going on with that), and the two-way rules have been altered here and there in the new CBA. So unless you are willing to do digging in the CBA, it's a lot of uncertainly.

But I think Lawson could sign a 2-way with Dallas, if they both wanted that.

I also think that players who don't have NBA contracts can continue to be eligible for 2-ways, until they have 3 prior years (even 1 day on an NBA contract counts as a year) of regular NBA contracts. Lawson has only had 1 afaik.

Thank you Mr. Gump.

I've gone ahead and did some digging on the new 2023 CBA and its 2-way eligibility.

^ from the NBPA website. https://nbpa.com/cba

Here is what it states:

Quote:Page 75: Subsection E; ii and iii

ii) No Team may sign or convert a player to a Two-Way Contract if the player has or may have four (4) or more Years of Service at any point during the Contract. For example, a player with three (3) Years of Service would not be eligible to sign a Two-Way Contract with a term of two (2) years. Notwithstanding the foregoing, a Team may sign or convert a player who has four (4) Years of Service to a Two-Way Contract covering no more than one (1) Season if the player was credited with one (1) or more Years of Service in respect of a Season in which he (A) did not play in a Regular Season, Play-In, or playoff game and (B) was on a Team’s roster at all times from the first day of the Regular Season through the end of the last day of the Regular Season

iii)  No Team may sign or convert a player to a Two-Way Contract, or acquire a Two-Way Contract by means of assignment, if, as a result, the player would or could be under a Two-Way Contract for any part of more than three (3) Salary Cap Years with the same NBA Team. For example, a player who completes a two-year Two-Way Contract with a Team could not subsequently sign a two-year Two-way Contract with that Team.

So Lawson falls under 4 years of service. He has only been in the league for 2 years (1 game with MIN, 14 with DAL in 2022-23 +Last season with DAL). So he's still qualified for another 2 years of 2-way service. Thus Lawson passes the rules listed in ii.

Now in iii, is where things get a bit weirder. By the language, any part of more than 3 salary cap years essentially disqualifies Lawson from returning to the Mavs. However, if he's allowed a 3rd year, which it could be interpreted as such given the "more than", then Lawson can sign a one year 2-way contract with Dallas, but thereafter the Mavs can only sign him to a regular season contract (even if he still has 1 more year of 2-way eligibility). In this scenario Lawson is taking a 1 year prove-it deal, which may not be in his best interests.

If he cannot be signed for longer than 3 Salary Cap Years at all, then Lawson cannot return under a 2-way contract. I guess we'll see. Kidd's comments earlier today made it seem like Lawson won't be returning at all.

Gotcha, didn’t do my homework. Was thinking Lawson was still on two way.  Thx

"Lawson can sign a one year 2-way contract with Dallas, but thereafter the Mavs can only sign him to a regular season contract." AGREED. An NBA team is limited to having a player on a 2-way deal with them to 3 seasons. Any part of a season counts as a season. The Mavs have had Lawson on a 2-way for the last 2.

MORE NOTES and clarifications
1 I think Kidd was simply saying nice things about a player who fell short.
2 "Years of Service" is a defined technical term in the CBA which refers to NBA years and status. Years of Service were originally given while playing in NBA games on a 2-way deal, but that was changed at some point (not sure when), and 2-way players no longer get a year of service for anything (including playing in NBA games) under that 2-way deal. It takes a regular NBA contract.
3 It looks to me like Lawson's NBA deal last season was counted as his 2nd year.
4 The question of whether Lawson does a 2-way with Dallas -- imo it's not about the rules, but rather whether Mavs want him (more than other 2-way options), as well as whether he gets other offers he likes better

I don't want to be insensitive, but it makes sense. The Marshall hire was a PR counter to the mountains of sleaze that came out about the toxicity of Cuban's first decade or so of ownership (some of which I saw first hand while working there, even in just an arena entertainment capacity, which is so far removed from the inner circle I might as well have been a concessions worker, but I still saw stuff). The new owners/governor don't have to worry about fixing that, because they're not Cuban.
