MAVS NEWS:

That, and "consultant" is usually seen as front office.  I can't think of a situation where a consultant was actually on the bench.

Love the Vogel hire. Legit, experienced NBA champion coach as consultant is not too shabby. I can see value in having such a set of dependable eyes on the team, only at a remove. Less likely to be swayed by emotion or vibe in the locker room when you are not around the team and traveling everyday.

Does PHX get any sort of offset if he gets hired for a coaching position?

None of them are "hurting" for $$

Latrell Sprewell
Darius Miles
Antoine Walker
Shawn Kemp
Dennis Rodman

to name a few.

My point was that Frank is flush and can just hang out doing whatever he finds interesting with people he feels comfortable being around. Probably doesn't hurt to get closer to the new owners' piggy bank.

I really would hope he's on the bench as a lead assistant type of guy. Probably not though.

I doubt Sweeney would be up for a demotion.  He's seen as one of the better young assistants in the league.

That's a very fair point. At the same time there is a chance that Sweeney/Dudley/etc. can all leave for a head coaching job. Getting Vogel on the bench aids in case of that scenario.

Don't you think Vogel is the most likely to land a HC gig of the three? He has won a championship, after all.

For sure. But I do find it interesting he wasn't considered for many other HC jobs and Sweeney was.

Vogel being a consultant might mean he's the first one to leave the bench anyways, but for the time being I'm glad the Mavs are adding talent to the coaching roster.

Not just a talent addition. He has inside info on other organizations and their past potential trade partners. The next Mavs trade is gonna be a doozy.

EXCLUSIVE: In a wide-ranging interview with @TheSteinLine, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd reveals that he visited 11-time NBA champion Phil Jackson over the summer to discuss coaching philosophies, employing the Triangle offense, and more.

Full interview: https://youtu.be/tlscuChT8cU

"To be able to talk basketball, it was a masterclass,” Kidd said to Marc Stein via DLLS Sports. “To be able to sit down and watch video. He was running the video and it was just surreal to be in the same room talking basketball with one of the greatest. I think he's a genius in the game of basketball. It was incredible.”

…or with a white dude like Dirk. Or Luka.

Funny how those narratives dissolve when you win, and when you have guys in their sweet spot of production.

That's the most intelligent thing I've heard Kidd say re: offense.  Like Lebron learned, Luka has to play more off the ball.

I was speaking in terms of current players and coaches.  If you're a retired player, (even if you didn't make serious money) you did what you were supposed to, (don't spend money foolishly) you should be set for the rest of your life.

Dallas Mavericks G Dante Exum has sustained a serious right wrist injury that could require surgery, sources tell @TheAthletic. Treatment options are being evaluated for Exum, who emerged as a key reserve guard on Mavs NBA Finals run last season. Tough early season blow for Mavs.

Mavs guard depth is still pretty solid, but it’s not too late to sign DSJ.
