Trade & FA 2024-25:

People around the league are not ruling out the Clippers as a potential landing spot for Zach LaVine, per @JCowleyHoops

In a follow-up chat after the presser, Silver told me that the league is working to add a "salary-cap manager" feature to the NBA app, which will give fans a way to test trades/signings under CBA rules and, presumably, help explain the machinations of the second apron.

Right the fans. I wonder through how many illegal trades the league office had to go through and reject/alter, cause even the nerds in the front offices, couldn´t keep track anymore of all the rules. Big Grin Big Grin

That's actually a reasonable theory. Perhaps even front offices were having issues making trades so the league felt compelled to make a tool and they figured they could just make it available to everyone.

If that's the case, then Mr. Gump and Dan have their work cut out for them and Mr. Silver should hire them to teach these FO!

Sources: Gary Trent Jr. signed in Milwaukee in large part because they promised a starting gig. Lakers didn't want to promise a starting gig to Klay Thompson and didn't offer it to GTJ. More here in The Lounge: https://x.com/i/broadcasts/1djGXrgDkRyxZ

What a great deal for MIL.
(07-16-2024, 03:50 PM)SleepingHero Wrote: At face value? Not really. Nance is a versatile defender and a solid backup big at this stage of his career. My hang up is what is Nance bringing that this team desperately needs AND is worth the hypothetical trade?

What role will he take? Glancing at the roster it'd have to be a Maxi replacement. Does Nance do anything better than Maxi? Not really. Maybe availability (which I'm not discounting) but Maxi is a better shooter and still a better defender.

Other than that, he isn't going to take minutes from Lively/Gafford. He isn't going to play over PJ/Marshall.

Then we get into the cost of actually acquiring the guy. Lets say the Hawks do come down from their ridiculous demands and accept 2 2nds as a starting point (or 1 2nd here cause the Mavs only have 1 2nd).

Hardy's contract leaves us 9.2 mil short of a potential Nance trade. If we threw in Powell, we're still 5.2 mil short. Who else are we adding here? OMax? Or are we just going to do a Maxi+Hardy deal and hope Nance is better?

I just don't really see it. At best, Nance is a tiny bit better than Maxi. At worst, we're doing a lateral move for a Maxi replacement and are giving up Hardy for the privilege.

I think this team needs maybe 1 more POA defender in the DJJ mold if they are going to go and try to upgrade the rotation. This guy ideally can guard the opposing team's perimeter guard and maybe even initiate the offense/handle the ball. There aren't many guys in the league that can do both.

Marcus Smart is a name that interests me but a deal for him would cost a lot.

Yes, Nance wouldn't be taking minutes from Gafford/Lively.  He'd be replacing Maxi.

I would say they're a push on switching defense, Nance is the better scorer and much better rebounder.  Maxi hasn't been near the league average of 37%3pt since 2020-21; he is no longer a stretch 4 and was unplayable for stretches in the playoffs.

As you pointed out, availability is a huge difference.  Maxi has averaged missing 42 games the last 2 seasons.

IMO Nance is an upgrade.  I wonder if ATL would bite at Maxi + 2SRPs?  May take away the sting of giving up 4 SRPs for Bey.

Maybe. More likely though is that they just signed that massive new TV deal and want to get more and more eyeballs on the games. That's why the NFL exploded was a combination of parity and fantasy football. NBA is just trying to follow suit.
Find me at Lakersball.com. I'm done with the Nico and the Mavs.

Some Lakers role players have negative trade value around the league, per @jovanbuha

“D’Angelo Russell and Jarred Vanderbilt, Gabe Vincent, Rui Hachimura, they have somewhere between neutral to negative trade value across the league. There are certain teams that have interest in maybe one of those guys, but there are very few if any teams that have interest in multiple of those guys, and that’s ultimately been why the Lakers have been not able to find a deal.”

Ah I see. We differ on the perceived impact of Nance vs. Maxi. I just don't think Nance is that much of an upgrade over Maxi at all. His contract is more expensive (11.2 vs. 11).

In terms of role, Maxi is our lone "stretch" 5. It may be stretch to call him a stretch 5, but he still attempts 3s at double the rate than Nance does, and has hit at a better percentage rate given the volume difference. And somehow, Maxi always seems to step up come playoff time and turn into a 40%+ 3pt shooter. Nance isn't that type of guy, attacking more in the low post and off PnR's.

Defensively I still think Maxi is more versatile than Nance today.

Finally the Mavs don't have 2 2nds to send in a trade if I remember correctly.  They only received the better of Philly/Denver's 2025 2nd. So in order to facilitate a Nance deal it'd have to be that 2025 2nd OR Hardy.

Both of which I'm not really excited about, given that Nance isn't that much better than Maxi, if at all.

Every time I see Larry Nance Jr's name I think of Dirk hitting 30,000 points.

Most execs around the league still think Lavine could wind up on the Clippers.

NEW Bleacher Report Mock Trade:

Mavericks Receive:
• Julius Randle

Knicks Receive:
• PJ Washington
• Daniel Gafford
• Jaden Hardy
• 2025 2nd Round Pick (via TOR)
• 2028 2nd Round Pick (via MIA)

Bleacher Report has to lose their syndication if their writers can't even get fake trades correct. Not only do the Mavs not have those 2nds available to trade, but this also prevents them from actually filling out the rest of the roster given that they're hardcapped. Nevermind that Randle doesn't really make sense on this team???

I got into it with some folks on BR this morning (yesterday morning, now...) about this proposed trade. The Mavs are already switching out their POA defender (DJJ) for Splash Grandpa in the starting lineup, and now they trade PJail (and DLive's backup too!) for an empty stats guy who plays no defense. I suppose we've hiring Mike D'Antoni to be our coach, too.

The fact that there were people defending this trade and even wanted it makes me kind of sick to my stomach.

It probably doesn't need to be said, but that's the stupidest trade idea I have seen in awhile. Gave me a good laugh. Big Grin

This reminds me of a scene in the Witcher 3 when a scholar proclaims that he wants to go to the front lines of a battle in order to document it and Geralt responds "Tired of life?"

I read this trade and think "Tired of winning?"

Markelle Fultz and Tyus Jones are still out there…I wonder why.
Westbrook traded to Jazz. Expected to be bought out.
