Trade & FA 2024-25:

Hear me out... A Shamet signing could be a signal from the FO that they are all in on revamping the offense and adding in a bunch more movement in it. Shamet is a movement shooter, though not on the same level as Klay.

Getting Shamet basically would let the Mavs continue playing a "Klay-lite" player if they wanted to while Klay is on the bench.

Could also be good Hardy insurance.

I don't think he's an actual target, given no one but one account tweeted the Mavs were going to go after Shamet. But I can rationalize the thinking if they are targeting him.

Same category as DSJ. Extra POA off the bench. Is there even any money left on the market? Certainly not the full MLE but I guess some teams have split it or can use the BAE.

...but we still need somebody to dribble the ball up the floor and set up others. It´s not that I don´t think Shamet doesn´t have a useful skillset, but you can´t have 50% of the roster be catch and shoot SGs, while Luka and Kyrie kill themselves. Fatigue leads to injuries, injuries lead to increased minutes for Luka or Kyrie, which leads to more injuries. I think a DSJ could easily play significant minutes during the regular season. Our need for dribble creation is that big.

Me too. Examples in no particular order: Lowry, Morris 1, Morris 2, Seth Curry, Bertans, Dwight Powell.
I was really interested to see how this played out last offseason. Maxey had a legit case to be bummed that he wasn't extended last year. He didn't let it bother him, played great and was rewarded with a huge deal.

No, I didn't prioritize them.

ESPN Sources with @TimBontemps: The Sacramento Kings are agreed on a sign-and-trade that will land DeMar DeRozan on a three-year deal, send Harrison Barnes to the San Antonio Spurs and Chris Duarte, two second-round picks and cash to the Chicago Bulls.

DeMar DeRozan will sign a three-year, $70 million-plus deal to join the Kings, sources tell ESPN.

Is this where the roster stands now?
Luka, Exum
Kyrie, Grimes, Hardy
Klay, Naji, OMax
PJ, Maxi, Morris
Lively, Gafford, Powell

That's 14.

Lawson is on the roster. Morris is not. Stein says Morris will be, we’re all assuming Lawson will be waived.

If they want to give themselves a good cushion under the 1st apron, Lawson has to be waived. Especially if they are also looking at other guys like DSJ/Dinwiddie/Shamet.

Yeah. I was just replying to the post. That wasn’t the Mavs current 14 man roster is all.
@SpursReporter
Take Note: The Sacramento #Kings and the Golden State #Warriors who were reported to have the most aggressive trade offers on the table for Utah’s Lauri Markkanen have moved on. Yesterday we heard this news (clip below) late in the afternoon.

On Markkanen's current salary, NBA restrictions limit his extension to a salary worth about $27 million, so the Jazz will need to renegotiate his deal before extending him. The negotiation window opens August 6 for an extension that could reach four years and $113 million.

It benefits interested teams to have Markkanen sign his $27M per year extension in early August and THEN be traded at the deadline.

Otherwise he will become a free agent next summer and his salary will jump to whatever the market can bear for a player who puts up 23 points and 8 rebounds per game while shooting 3s at a 40% clip. (Hint: it will be millions of dollars higher than $27M.)

NBA teams also know that Markkanen is a risky trade for them and that Utah is basically conducting a blind bidding war. Why would those teams pay a premium to trade for Markkanen right now knowing that he could turn out to be a one year rental.

Why wouldn’t teams wait to see if Ainge (master of the sign and trade deal) can lock him up before losing him for nothing?
If he can’t lock him up, then Lauri’s trade value starts to drop. It’s simple. No trade involving Markkanen is likely to happen before early August.

Teams are moving on.

FWIW the LBJ contract snugs LA just a hair below apron 2. It was much closer than I expected.

They aren't hard-capped, however. In an emergency, they could go on over apron 2-- they would just have to suffer the consequences that arise.

In contrast, the Mavs ARE hard-capped - ie, can't cross the Apron 1 line for any reason. So they have reason to be more cautious. But will they leave way less of a cushion than I have been expecting? I'm curious to see what will happen.

Just to clear up the finality of the Klay trade....

"We don’t yet know the exact details of the 2025 second-rounders being acquired by Dallas and Minnesota, but it looks like one of them is the 2025 Nuggets pick that Charlotte initially agreed to acquire as part of the Jackson trade and one of them is the 2025 Sixers pick that Charlotte already controlled. The Hornets were always going to send out two second-round picks for Green — they’re just going to Dallas and Minnesota now, instead of Dallas and Golden State."

@wojespn
Free agent guard Jordan McLaughlin has agreed to a one-year deal with the Sacramento Kings, agent Greg Lawrence of @wassbasketball tells ESPN.
I read that Gary Trent is someone of I terst along with Dinwiddie is the lakers can free up money to use their MLE. Question is how they can clear up money.

Lebron has a no trade clause but then Added a 15% trade kicker if he is traded. The GOAT!
Antonio Daniels on the Fan yesterday. Worth a listen. Sounds like Naji could be our favorite Mav next year.

Quote:According to Jovan Buha and Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Lakers are interested in guards Gary Trent Jr. and Spencer Dinwiddie provided they are able to clear enough space to gain usage of their taxpayer midlevel exception.

Lakers need to dump D'Lo+Gabe Vincent for free basically to clear the full MLE. If they just want to use their TP-MLE then they have to dump someone making over 6 mil for free.

Not sure how they expect to get Trent Jr. for that much, but the cap space may have dried up.
