If Klay comes in crazy motivated to prove all the doubters wrong, we're gonna be dangerous. Seems like he was really unhappy last season due to the contract issues, the Warriors sucking, the Draymond drama and all that. Also, gonna need Lively to turn into an All-NBA defensive type center to cover up for the lack of defenders we have.

Thank you. That gets me started. Much appreciated!
FWIW, I'm showing the Mavs have slots 14 and 15 open, and after setting aside a cushion for the Apron of 1M, have about 3.7M left to spend (either all on 14, or to split between the 2).

DAL trades Green to CHA, and gets Klay from GS, and the better of SRP x and y from CHA.
GS sends Klay to DAL, and gets the lesser of SRP x and y from CHA.
CHA gets Green, and sends one SRP apiece to DAL and GS.
DAL won't get a TPE - they send Green and he''s the trade match for Klay. GS gets a TPE for the size of Klay's salary.
Good recap of the trade.
AND we've retained the TPE created from the THJ trade.
Not that the Mavs can use it realistically, given that they still need to be under the 178.2 apron. But still something to monitor.

I think the only thing you missed is the additional 2031 SRP from Dallas to GS.

At some point, I am hoping that this board can fill in the gaps on the Dereck Jones Jr debacle.
Was this an issue about money? Was it about the timing of the trade? Was this an issue strictly about weird rules concerning agents? Is Dereck Jones happy to be a Clipper? How did this get screwed up and why isn't he a Maverick?

He wanted a chance to start. Klay is the starter so that’s impossible here. He took the money from the Clips to try and fill the starting void that PG left.

Thanks SH and Tyler. About the TPE that will be generated by THJ to DET, it lasts a full year from the date of that trade, so it may be useful when numbers change in summer 2025.

What are your thoughts on a potential Maxi+Powell dump to bring in 1 more guy (preferably right at 15mil or below) and then sign a vet with the last amount of room at around ~3mil.

thank Forrest for explicating the details of the trade. how much does green make though? 13m/yr something? if the mavs are hard capped i don't think they can acquire more salary than they send in a trade tbh. so I guess someone else could be involved and sent to Charlotte (Powell, hopefully).

We could have signed him before negotiations with Klay even got started. We had Marshall signed almost immediately after FA opened up (and it was discovered the new agent was problematic). There was very little buzz about KT when the Marshall trade went public at that point. (And then we discovered the new agent apparently wasn't problematic)
DJJ was a starter, but he only averaged just over 23 MPG. I'm not sure that would change much no matter who starts.
It seems like something else to me.

@All_Things_Mavs
available free agents I could see the Mavs chasing with…
$4.4M remaining of the MLE:
Spencer Dinwiddie
Markelle Fultz
Gary Harris
Talen Horton-Tucker
Monte Morris
Dennis Smith Jr.
Vet minimum:
Pat Beverley
Reggie Bullock
Vlatko Cancar
Robert Covington
Kira Lewis Jr.
Kyle Lowry
Marcus Morris

As we are getting numbers on deals, I don't think money had anything to do with it. DAL had room for Klay at 50M and also DJJ at 30M (the deal he got from LAC), and I think that was what the Mavs offered. Maybe they even had an agreement of sorts with DJJ, like everyone said.
I think DJJ got cold feet when it looked like DAL would have the money but no assured starting job, and they both went to their backup plan -- DJJ found the same deal in LA who had a starting job open, while DAL pivoted to Naji (who happened to be a bit less expensive).

Green makes 12.65. It's enough to match Klay's 15.87. It was a 200%-rule trade, not 100%, which is the rule for teams under the hard cap. The Mavs primary restriction was staying under the Apron, which they did.

Gary Harris re-signed with Orlando
Out of those names, none sound appetizing. Exum is as good as any of them.

That's what Smitty said, but it feels a little incomplete to me. I just wonder if the media has posted anything in print that explains it in full.

The math: you have 1 empty slot, then trade 2-for-1, then fill 1 slot with a return player in trade, and fill 2 slots with minimums.
You have 14 players, and allowing for your 1M cushion, the player traded to you can make up to14.5M-ish.
The player: what's his role (ie, where do you see a specific need, that requires a 14.5M player to fill it, keeping in mind that you are going to pay this guy almost as much as you pay PJW or Klay)? You're paying that much for a backup? Are you contemplating investing more assets than Kleber/Powell (picks)?
Not sure I see that as something to pursue, but who do you think fits and is gettable using that pair?

a starting job matters more to him than the extra 1-2m annual salary. dude's main focus is on his next contract, the size of which will be pretty much dependent upon his performance and significance in the duration of this 3 year deal imho. if he remains at his current level, without significant setback or leap forward, he will get paid good on his next contract in three years because his salary on the prior one (the current one, 10m/yr) is big enough and the salary cap is projected to increase a lot over the next a few years. so it's all about money for him, and future money matters more to him. Nico would probably offer him the full MLE if he accepts a reduced role here, but it would hurt him financially in the long term and he would have every reason to decline it tbh.

After taking on Reggie Jackson’s expiring contract from the Nuggets for four second-round picks, the Hornets sent two to acquire Josh Green.
Charlotte essentially acquired Green and his valuable contract — three-years, $42 million — for free.
New GM Jeff Peterson is cooking.
4 2nds? Not 3?
Seems like a detail is missing here

Go check out the Timpf video I just dropped in the Klay thread. I don’t know if it’s 100% accurate in terms of motivation, but it’s interesting.

RGP floated the idea of Isaiah Stewart earlier (15m flat) that intrigued me as a potential Maxi replacement.
Of course DFS is always on my radar.
Kelly Olynyk and Bobby Portis also fit the bill as potential upgrades to Maxi.
I don't think this is a necessary move. But might as well exhaust all options because I truly think for the first time since 2011 the Mavericks are real contenders.
