Trade & FA 2024-25:
Knowing what this team did with Javale McGee would there be an option to SW Dwight Powell?
Coopz (@Coopz___)
For all the different possible ways that Josh Green could’ve gone out with as his last game with the Mavs, he went out like a man with a shield on his chest; that won’t and can’t be forgotten.

I will say, I am going to miss Josh Green. Hope he lights it up in Charlotte.

Agree, but to Mvossman's point, we're probably looking at it wrong.

Think this way, defensive matchup-wise:

Kyrie/Hardy
Grimes/Hardy
Klay/Exum/Luka/Marshall/Grimes
Luka/Marshall/Klay
Center

LOTS of combinations to go to when PJ sits, given that Luka's a strong rebounder and his best matchup (to defend) is often the opposing 4 and almost ALWAYS an opposing forward.

So what Im saying is that one of the things I like about that approach (in addition to being able to see the most minutes for Grimes and Marshall that way) is that it leaves the door cracked for O-Max just a little, whereas adding a 4 (like Grant, just for example) might've slammed his opportunities to develop here into the dirt.

Make sense?

Noooooo, he's 6'7", 220 (bigger than Jones) and much too slow to be a guard. He can defend some guards, but he's a rather prototypical SF, I think.

S/W Powell adds 1.6 mil of dead space to the team's cap sheet for the next 5 years. It'd free up 2.4 mil of space right now.

Not sure that really makes any difference.

Bitter sweet for me. I've had a few days to mentally prepare myself for this inevitable outcome, so there's no instant reaction burn the place down type stuff for me... like there was with Brunson. I hope he blows up in the same way! Green Team!

It looks like he's got really good handles for his size, but yeah, I don't expect him to be bringing the ball up the court very often.

I sure hope so.

Im so high on Grimes. I truly think in 3 years from now after we've gone back to back to back, and Klay retires. Grimes will be taking the mantle. People will be saying "Holy shit the Mavs are going from Klay Thompson to Quenten Grimes? That is just so unfair"

He definitely has a nice handle! I think people are going to really like him!

I would've preferred DJJ, but there's a good side to going this way.

If you are trying to free up the remainder of the MLE or the BAE that $2.4 million is significant. Now over the 5 years the dead money becomes an issue, and probably not worth 2.4 in any other circumstance. But if a player you like is available for 4-ish it is an option

Don't think DJJ wanted to backup Klay, as I'm sure has been talked about already.

Am I greedy to want Nico to get one more?
I'm thinking our FT% will improve. Thankfully.

I think everyone coming in is better at the line, and Klay is ridiculously good.

Naji is way better offensively than I thought. His highlight reel is fun to watch. He has a lot more ways to score than DJJ, but I doubt he'll be the defender DJJ was. Hopefully he's close though. We can't afford a huge drop off.

Good point. Weren't we dead last in the playoffs?

With Klay Tompson in the mix at an estimated $15.9M (and Josh Green out), I've got the Mavericks at 14 players and:

$3.4M OVER the tax
$3.9M under the first apron (hard-capped at first apron)

Hold up. I've been playing around with numbers of Klay at 16.2. If he starts at 15.9 then bump up all the numbers I've posted by 300k

Sooo...we lost a lot of athleticism in DJJ and Green, I'm gonna miss the fast break lobs.

The remainder of the MLE and BAE is available right now, All they have to do is waive AJ Lawson's non-guaranteed deal with no penalty and you've created the space.
