Trade & FA 2024-25:

The Pelicans have expressed trade interest in Wendell Carter Jr., per @MikeAScotto (https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-rumors-l...tein-more/).

If the Magic pursue Isaiah Hartenstein in free agency, many rival executives expect Carter to become available.

Mavs were reportedly interested in Carter Jr at the trade deadline. I guess he’d be a potential Kleber-replacement. Unfortunately he has missed A LOT of games over the last years.

Still I’d happily get younger at that position. Wendell Carter, Isaiah Stewart, Jalen Smith are all intrigueing names here Imo.

Mavs were also reportedly interested in Stewart at the TDL. Maybe there’s a way to
plug that into the Hardaway trade?

Kyrie | Hardy | Exum
Klay | Grimes | ???
Luka | DJJ | Omax
PJ | Stewart | ???
DLive | Gafford | DP

That way you’d once again increase the number of young dependable players in your rotation. As of now the swaps of Hardaway/Klay and Green/Grimes are mostly „age neutral“, so another guy in his early 20s who can play a big role would be a good fit.

So, let's say they announce Klay S&T to Dallas.  Is it just announced as a salary number, or does it include outgoing players.

If Green isn't going to GSW, do they announce a different Green trade immediately?  Or, do they wait?

Once you have Thompson's salary number and know what is happening with Green, it is pretty easy to figure out DJJ's number.  It if isn't the full NT MLE, does that feel too much like a concluded negotiation?

Is anyone else outgoing (GSW has a TPE large enough to take in Hardy).  Is that the compensation and Green is a straight deal for draft compensation?

DJJ is a Dallas FA, so there have been no restrictions on negotiations and talking with the Mavs. I'm sure the Mavs already have been given a working range of how much it will take to re-sign him, and will work to that end. They can't actually offer to him until they have something to offer, and they can't know what they have to offer until they finish elsewhere.

FWIW it's way more likely than not, as I see it, that if they get Klay, it will be rolled into the DET deal for greater flexibility all around.

If you're looking for more cap room to sign Klay + DJJ, including Hardy in a trade is not the answer. Trading him would actually yield about -70,000 in cap room, because you have to re-fill the roster slot with a more expensive player. Every time you add an outgoing player to the pile, gotta subtract 2.1M from his salary to see what is gained (if anything).

There is zero space for DJJ if you trade for Stewart in the THJ trade.

If the Mavs are going to go for Maxi replacement it'd be at the TDL/fdraft/or next year's offseason just based on how tight the numbers are.

The Wizards possibly moving Tyus Jones via sign-and-trade is picking up steam, per @MikeAScotto (https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-rumors-l...tein-more/).

Jones has consistently been one of the NBA’s most efficient playmakers in assist-to-turnover ratio.

Jarred Vanderbilt
Gabe Vincent

“The Lakers have also been exploring trade scenarios with the contracts of D’Angelo Russell, Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt and Gabe Vincent, sources said, and Brook Lopez has been one of the primary options on the Lakers’ board of hopeful acquisitions, sources said.”

That would be beautiful, maybe they could have an actual play-offs in the East next year with Philly, NY, Orlando and maybe Milwaukee, instead of just giving Boston a bye to the NBA finals again.

Oh wow yeah, I think Ingram in Orlando makes a ton of sense. Gives Paolo a true 2nd option.

Might get a bit iso-heavy just because of how bad Ingram can be moving the ball. But he provides a lot of scoring to their all defense lineup.

Also don't want to discount a possible Brook Lopez+Bobby Portis to New Orleans, Ingram to MIL type of deal.

Seems a pretty logical Lavine trade destination. He can come off the bench behind Bronny. Big Grin

I’m told the Lakers and Trail Blazers have been in consistent talks on a deal for Jerami Grant. I wouldn’t call it particularly imminent but the sides have definitely been active most of today.

That tells me that Klay to Dallas is gaining momentum.
Find me at Lakersball.com. I'm done with the Nico and the Mavs.

Spoke to one source within the Mavs organization after all of the reports dropped and asked for their feeling on the Derrick Jones Jr. situation:

I can echo what @MazurFocus & @TheSteinLine reported: they are confident something will get done to keep Derrick Jones Jr. in Dallas.

Dan made a great point about DJJ's new representation wanting to delay any potential announcement just because they want to 100% make the commission on the new deal and the old agency can't protest it. Because if DJJ signs July 1st, the old agency can say "well we were the ones who negotiated this deal, and the new guys can't talk to you till July 11th, so why should they get the commission when we created the deal?'

Could really be that simple.

My final 2024 NBA cap space projections:

76ers: $61.3M
Pistons: $51.1M
Magic: $49.5M
Jazz: $38.1M
Thunder: $30.8M
Spurs: $26.4M

PHI, DET, ORL and OKC could bump up a small amount.

SAS could stay over the cap, pending guarantees.

CHA could stay over the cap, or could create about $16M in space with Miles Bridges cap hold, up to $33.8M without Bridges cap hold.

Who is DJJ rep now if he announced the change a few days ago?  Why dose Klutch have to wait until 7/11.

If I'm the old agent, I'm suing anyway.  I laid all the groundwork the past few weeks.
