Trade & FA 2024-25:

How "typical Mavs" would that be?

If the Mavs can convince DJJ to sign here for that starting salary, they SHOULD go this route. If there isn’t a compelling reason to pay the tax (yet), kick those repeater penalties even further down the road!

I trully hope those Mavs days are over.

Dead on with this.  Mavs are notoriously terrible at FA.  Hope Nico and the gang have finally learned how the game works.

Another way of looking at it is he had one of the worst defensive ratings on the team for the season and got benched on a team desperately trying to make the playoffs. I’m going to miss having an elite defense.

I think we all collectively have PTSD after the last 12 or so years of abject failures in the summer.

I also truly hope those Mav days are over.

We exchange him for THj, add Grimes, and our defense is worse ?

Its more so Klay will be getting the lion share of minutes now, not DJJ. And because Klay isn't an elite defender, our defense will maybe be worse.

But if DJJ is still on this roster, our flexibility is still there. And I think Klay's defense is being underrated quite a bit here, even if he's not as good as DJJ.

So we might go

THjr ==> Klay
Green ==> Grimes

while keeping DJJ? And Klay might get slightly more than the MLE?

That would be a darn good offseason.

Another perspective if this pans out....

Starters:

Luka
Kyrie
Gafford
DJJ
PJ

Our rotation players are:

D. Lively
K. Thompson
Q. Grimes
J. Hardy
D. Exum

Is it just me, or does that look pretty good? That's a lot of versatility as well no matter how you configure minutes.

All comes down to Klay's contract and his role. My concern is that Klay is leaving the Warriors because he still expects to be a 30+ minutes per game starter no matter the circumstances. He isn't just replacing the 15-20 THJ minutes. He will take minutes from other guys. Even though that might not be in the best interest of the team.
Can you bench Klay in a situation where you need DJJ or Grimes to defend a scorer like Edwards in the clutch? That's what the Warriors tried to do and it didn't end well.

Here is GSW's cap sheet.  CBA Mav's stole it from some Golden State fan (and I'm stealing it from CBA Mavs).  With Paul erased, they are at $147.2mm with 11 players.  That is $24mm under their stated goal of getting out of the tax and about $30mm under the apron.

Add in a minimum and they have about $22mm to spend on two guys.  Could be Josh and someone for $9.3mm using the big MLE.  Could be the $16.2mm TPE from Hardaway and the NT MLE of $5.2mm.  Personally, if I were them, I'd do the latter and avoid being hard-capped.  Then at the TDL you have flexibility in case something incredible comes along.

If Klay would be happy with a bench role and MLE money there would be no reason for him to leave the Warriors.

Klay Thompson feels ‘disrespected’ by the Warriors, per
@ChrisBHaynes

“I believe the Warriors are probably offering him an annually, low $20M-type of contract. Is he willing to walk away from that because he feels disrespected? It looks like he is.”

This is the only way to look at it. The Mav’s title window closes if they build around Luka, Kyrie, and Klay — two NBA seniors and one slow footed offensive savant, none of whom can defend. The Mavs need athletic wings, period. This team would be worse than the Warriors were this year. The warriors know what they’re doing going with younger players who can defend, particularly with the league’s new emphasis on trying to hold down scoring and reward physical defense.

And that´s where we are f*****. He gets into 75/3 territory he´s instantly untradeable until the end of his career and we have to give up Green and Kleber.

50/3 is fine. Anything above is a disaster waiting to happen.
