Trade & FA 2024-25:

Agreed 100%.  I'm actually a little bummed.  The idea of salary dumping THJ to only sign DJJ as your offseason plan is at best a lateral move only if Hardy (or Grimes or Green) make a quantum leap next year.  If one of them doesn't, it's a step back for the team as a whole.  This thing still needs a true #3, reliable scoring option.  I continue to be impressed with Nico, so I'm hopeful he's got something else up his sleeve.

I appreciate THJ and wish him well.  I was at the MLK Day game where he and Kyrie went for 40 each.  That THJ would have made such a difference in the playoffs.  That is why, in the moment, the Mavs are worse off.

Bring back spencer on minimum deal too to run point off bench.

I’m actually hoping there’s a veteran 3&D wing trade to be had for Green and/or Maxi and wants to play for a contender. We also still need another floor general to help Luka and Kyrie minutes in the regular season. I’m excited for this squad!

Let’s say Mavs do nothing else except the Tim for Grimes deal. There’s a log jam at guard IMO.

Luka | Exum
Kai | Grimes | Green | Hardy | Lawson
DJJ |
PJW | Maxi | Omax | Morris
Lively | Gafford | Powell

I’m aware that Green and/or Grimes would play some 3 but I put them in their natural/preferred position.

To me the weakest spot is starting 3. DJJ is preferably a bench guy.

I’m willing to use Green, Hardy, Maxi and Powell to get a starting 3. Those 4 combine for ~30M

Does Green+Maxi+Hardy for Hunter+Griffin make sense for both teams?

Luka | Exum
Kai | Grimes | Lawson
Hunter | DJJ | Griffin
PJW | Omax | Morris
Lively | Gafford | Powell

This still holds true and now it’ll be interesting to see if Mavs think the same or stand pat. Hunter is just a name but the idea is the same for any starting “Forward”. Klay, Wiggins, Hunter, Harris, Grant, Kuzma, KCP.. Several names I don’t like but the Mavs might.
Damn good move by Nico. It didn't cost us a first like some thought it might. We got a young rotation player with upside back and now we can resign DJJ. THJ wasn't a rotation player the last couple of months. We are a better team now. Also, I doubt Nico is done.
this is a really smart move by the mavs, way better than the proposed shamet deal and other proposals. it creates the most space possible without costing too much in assets, which means better maneuverability for further deals.

The Denver Nuggets are showing interest in Klay Thompson as a potential replacement for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, per @sam_amick & @anthonyVslater

The Philadelphia 76ers are also expected to show interest in Thompson.

“A league source said Philadelphia has interest in Thompson. If the Nuggets lose free-agent-to-be Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who has decided to decline his player option and enter the market, a league source said Denver has pegged Thompson as a possible replacement.”

I think the focus of this offseaon was to move off Hardaway without giving up our main assets.  jones has his faults but his defense was so important to our run.   The other thing Nico is counting on is internal development:  PJ better shooting, both Hardy and Omax progressing, Green improving on defense etc.

The Mavs have picked up an interesting piece in Grimes too.  More
Importantly, they kept their main assets and now they can move on the right move….or more likely be patient and wait for the right move.

Although Cuban is now in the backseat, Durant doesn't have any interest in being in Dallas. Pouty Durant would not be a good addition. Big Grin

My favorite part might be that the Mavs get even younger. As much as I like Kleber I would probably double down on the youth movement and try to find his replacement this summer. Pipe dream would be a sign&trade for someone like Tillman, Toppin, Achiuwa or Jalen Smith.

One note about Grimes and Hardy……

They are playing for their careers next year. I like the idea of having them without an extension but under RFA status. I feel like we will get the best offseason and version of themselves that they are able to muster up.

We could evaluate long term fits this year and because of their small cap holds they’re able to be traded to anyone at the TDL to replenish our supply of 2nds in a worst case scenario where one of them doesn’t fit

OR

We find a trade we like this summer. Grimes, Hardy, Green, Omax are all great trade pieces that other teams are looking for. Plus we are set up to re-supply our youth pipeline with Ajinca and Lawson in the event we make a trade

Plus we have the versatility to draft and stash Ajinca and let him keep playing euro if we want to wait to make a move

I like the youth movement too. Kyrie and Maxi being the only “old” players feels like a good mix though rather than all young. Powell and Morris don’t count because they don’t play, but they’re perfect in the locker room. The problem with too many young players is they all want minutes. Even as we stand today it’s likely someone will be unhappy about riding the bench

Potential landing spots for Brandon Ingram according to
@JakeLFischer
:

Sacramento
Atlanta
Cleveland
Philadelphia

“One team to monitor for Ingram would be Sacramento. The Kings have been weighing paths to acquire various wings, sources said, from Kyle Kuzmato Zach LaVine, and Ingram could be another option for Sacramento to explore, sources said.”

Zaccharie Risacher and Jalen Johnson are expected to be the only players the Hawks won’t shop in trade talks, per @JakeLFischer

Trae Young, Dejounte Murray, De’Andre Hunter, Clint Capela, Onyeka Okongwu and Bogdan Bogdanovic all appear to be available.

The Pistons are set to decline Evan Fournier’s $19 million team option.

Fournier is seriously mulling over offers from EuroLeague teams to leave the NBA.

If Fournier stays, a shooter enters the veteran’s minimum market for contending teams.

I believe if Dallas wanted it, Atlanta would do Green + Lawson for Hunter straight up. Mavs would need an additional Kleber move to open the DJJ slot again. Atlanta has enough ballhandlers with Young/Murray/bogdnaovic for now, and unlike Hunter Green can slide in at SG to not mess with the Risacher/Johnson forward spots. He´s actually pretty perfect for them and saves them money.
Kinda crazy that we officially don't have a bad contract at the moment.
Kleber is probably the worst and I'd have to think he's closer to neutral value.
