Trade & FA 2024-25:

Makes sense. It’s a big year for Hardaway, with a wide range of outcomes. Everything from another decent contract to having to sign a “prove it” deal like Exum and DJJ just did is on the table for next summer. I imagine the role he’ll get this next season is a major focus for him right about now.

Detroit and Washington are perfect for him in this sense. Put up good numbers for half a season and then get traded to a contender at TDL

I don't think he'd be grossly overpaid at that number, as long as he continues to improve, but given the landscape out there and the belief that he wants to come back, I just feel like we're looking at something more in the $8-10M range. We'll see.

So, Mr. Harrison, on a team that pays Gafford $13.4mm to back up Lively and Maxi $11mm to back up PJ and Green $12.6mm to back up my client...what do you think my client should make?

I actually don't disagree with you...just being funny.  But, I don't think $12.8mm is too far off.  I've liked the way FG frequently targets something in the $10-$11 range.  Slight hometown discount, but not so much that you disrespect him.

I definitely feel like “respect” is the right word and and way of thinking. This is part of why I have a feeling Green might be gone. I don’t think they can pay DJJ less than him and justify how the playoff minutes shook out.

I also think it might be in the long term best interest of the Mavs and (in a way) Jones, himself, to keep him in a range where they have the option of moving HIM into a role similar to the one Green just played, hierarchy wise, without having to move him for pay structure reasons. They might actually find someone they like better in the near future.

It’s an interesting situation.

If they trade Green after extending him, like they traded DFS after extending him, I would worry about whomever Nico extends next.
Pessimism doesn’t make you smart, just pessimistic.

It's funny, agents never want to discuss buyer beware and lessons learned.  Maxi is baked and makes WAY too much to be in this state of decline.  Green, while not incredibly overpaid, has been a disappointment in development.

I don’t get the Maxi hate. Thought he had a terrific run in the playoffs.

No need to work with his agent.  Thj goes where we decide.

Maxi needs go too. He’s not good.  Can’t be relied on in playoffs.  Plays scared.  Won’t shoot - need better players

Given where he was re fighting through injuries, I totally agree.

The question about him is whether or not they believe he'll ever really be able to stay healthy gain. If they don't have faith in that I could see them seeing his role as badly in need of upgrade.

@MavsFilmRoom

Mark Bartelstein’s son, Josh Bartelstein (now with the Suns), used to work in the Detroit front office. He was also a college teammate of Tim Hardaway Jr. at Michigan.

I am sure the Bartelsteins have many connections to Detroit, even if the personnel may have changed recently.

@TheSteinLine

reports that the Mavericks are working directly with Mark Bartelstein, the agent of Tim Hardaway Jr., to find a new team for THJ.

Unclear right now as to where he will be traded.

Maxi was pretty darn good v. LAC.  Healthy, confident Maxi is super useful.  Then he took the spill, and the guy that came back was gimpy, hesitant Maxi.  Gimpy, hesitant Maxi is pretty close to playing 4 on 5.

NBA Draft night is the best. Everyone talking about the drama and storylines, some are right and some are just wrong.
My turn. Phoenix loves Kevin Durant and Kevin Durant loves Phoenix, and we are competing for a championship this year because we have the team to do it. Gotta love draft night! Go Suns.

Ishbia quickly coming out and trying to extinguish the KD trade rumors. Somehow this feels like a damage control move...

exactly, a healthy maxi is a good role player, a tough big who provides D and spacing, and such role players are not at all that cheap. maxi's contract ain't a bargain but he's not grossly overpaid either. he was healthy in our WCF run two years ago and in the late quarter of last season, and he looked rather good both times.

That was a nasty fall he took. TBH, I was surprised to see him suit up as quickly as he did. I'm thinking that would have lasted another couple weeks in the regular season. I think Kidd needed his length and defense and gambled on the offense and BOS was able to call him on it.

I'm not crying if he stays in DAL, but I feel like it's time to move on with someone more mobile and durable. I hope he gets into a good situation to finish his career.

This is pretty much where I am with it, too, as long as they come up with a solution to replace him, which I believe will be easier said than done. Every team wants rangy, versatile bigs who can move their feet to defend and space the floor, so it's not like the healthy ones who are actually impactful on defense are all that gettable.

But yeah, resetting the Kleber role with a younger guy would go a long way towards locking in the new timeline, and that could be a very good thing.

Trae Young is not expected to fetch a trade package similar to those of Mikal Bridges or Rudy Gobert on the trade market, per @BobbyMarks42

“Dejounte Murray actually has more value than Trae Young at this stage”

One of my favorite subtle story lines of the last 2 seasons was Luka finally putting to rest the Trae vs. Luka, who won the trade debate. I mean it was all obvious to us from the moment they stepped on the court, but now the greater NBA universe sees the truth.
