Nets would want at least a first in that deal

I think my biggest issue with roster construction is that we have the biggest strongest point guard in the league and yet we are so small and weak.

Green is a perfect example of this. He’s too small to be our starting 3. Gets pushed around too easily. DJJ on the other hand is much bigger and just as fast as Green at guarding point of attack. The solution to get bigger is moving a player like DJJ to the 3 and getting a big 4(Siakam, Grant, WCj, DFS, Isaac etc). Then it would be logical to make Green a guard. The problem with that is he can’t dribble, create or shoot at a high level. I really like his energy and he has games where he takes over. I’m just not sure he’s in the long term plans

Hardaway another undersized player.

I read somewhere that Kyrie is the best rebounding guard per 36 in the entire NBA. I would think Luka is right there. For us to give up those killer offensive rebounds like we do it’s a game decider if our shots aren’t falling. Just a few personnel changes could really flip the script on how these games are decided

Offensively our biggest issue is the everybody stand around and watch Luka show. While this is often effective(especially in the playoffs) it can’t be our all game go-to style. We need a team wide effort to move to the fast pace style. Use the ISO style when needed and use the Kyrie fast style when needed. Just be decisive about it

The problem is actually your definition of Luka as Point Guard. He is the Point Guard only on offense. He is a Forward on defense. Unless you think he is running around the court guarding the Steph Currys, Dame Lillards, SGAs, Devin Bookers of the NBA.

Once you all (and most importantly, the Mavs FO) accept that Luka is a Point Forward and understand what this means on defense, then maybe, hopefully, roster construction will get better as they try to obtain a better balance between offense, defense, play-making, height, athleticism, etc.

Can't find the tweet but read on Bleacher Report that Marc Stein said Siakam to the Mavs seems unlikely at this point.

I have no interest in wading through the semantical argument of point guard vs point forward, but Luka is clearly not defending the smallest quickest player on the other team.  From a defensive standpoint, we are hiding Luka on the weaker forward and Kyrie on the weaker guard.  In our starting lineup Luka is the second biggest player and DJJ third.  Green/Exum are not playing the 3 defensively, they are generally guarding the better guard.  I think our size issues are way more an issue on the second unit.  We are playing undersized guys in the frontcourt, and its particularly bad when Luka is on the bench.

Yeah I´d argue that there are not many teams that have a vastly superior rotation to

Doncic/Hardy/Curry
Irving/THJ/Lawson
Green/DJJ/

whichever way you match them. On the other hand, I´m not sure you could build an All-Star out of all our PF/Cs combined. Cry

Just getting that rotation upgraded to something like

Washington/Kleber/Williams
Lively/WCJ/Powell

could change our trajectory dramatically.

Not really. "He's a PG on offense" is exactly what I think, too.

I am reluctant to give up on this dude so early.  His size and athleticism...plus his desire to attack the rim with ball have me intrigued.  I think he eventually figures the defensive footwork stuff out and turns into a problematic defender...and then his aggressiveness to attack the rim with ball(he has a few tricks in his bag around the rim)....Im not trading this dude if I dont have to.

Welcome back. Good post.

As for the above, do not worry, my friend. You see, the Mavs cannot trade O-Max. I forbid it.

Stein mentioned WCJr being available in a note again today.  He’s been mentioning this a good bit and no one else is really saying much about him.  Stein has also been strangely quiet about Mav’s rumors.  If “league officials” are saying Carter is available, are those “league sources” coming from Dallas.

If he was healthy, Carter would really be a good fit here.  He’s rarely healthy, but neither is Maxi.  Would you rather have younger Maxi who gets hurt a lot of older Maxi who gets hurt a lot.  I could see Dallas having more interest in WCJr if Maxi was part of the deal (so hang in there, it’s coming).

The price for Orlando is THJ.  They are 29th in the league in 3 point shooting and THJ isn’t shy.  And obviously, the Magic coach knows him well.  THJ for WCJ doesn’t seem like an even swap given WCJ’s health.  So, the question for me is whether there is a way of engineering a deal that has elements other than THJ for broken down Carter Jr.

Turns out THJ is a match for WCJr and Ingles.  So, call that the first trade.  Ingles, BTW, has a TO for next year at $11mm (so call him an expiring contract with benefits).  Orlando is currently about $5mm under the cap and once that trade is done they will be enough under the cap to fit Maxi into their cap.  So, trade #2 is Maxi for a second rounder and an $11mm TPE.  The last benefit of such a deal is that Dallas now sits $8mm under the tax for the current season and could use the rest of the MLE or their existing TPE to take on a player and still be under the tax.

So, the net result of such a deal end up

THJ (who isn’t ideal here)
Maxi (who is never healthy)

For

Ingles (who is just as bad defensively, but you can run some offense through him and can be expiring)
WCJr (who when healthy is a much better and longer Maxi)
TPE of $11mm
Ability to use the current MLE or TPE and stay under the tax
2nd round pick

If we could ever get a week where both Maxi and Carter are healthy, I could see them doing this.  A couple more guys and we could run an all-Australia lineup at times.

I like the trade from cap standpoint.

The downside of course is that you're trading away THj's 18 PPG for a player that has knee tendenitis and misses a lot of games coupled with Ingles (in trade 1) who only manages about 5 points a game now and can't play defense. Trade 2 with Maxi pretty much sounds like a wash given that neither are very healthy. WCJr adds a few rebounds, but it still feels like more needs to be done before the trade deadline. Trading a guy who isn't healthy for another guy who isn't healthy is not that much of a trade even if the guy is younger and better.

I think I either need another player other than Ingles that can actually play in a trade, or if we can find some way to package Holmes instead of Maxi - which doesn't seem likely unless we add some draft capital.

As much as I would like to trade THj, I think we would miss him in the rotation and have very little to show for it in that particular trade scenario (except the ability to stay under the cap).
