The problem though is that Maxi will be hurt at some point and this team is running out of options at that point.
Powell for 10-15 minutes a game against second units is a positive. He is the perfect injury protection which I agree Maxi will need. Thats why I liked the signing at barely over the min.

Well, surely even the most irrational Powell haters among us can admit that he’s a luxury as an injury-replacement-level player, and Grant Williams CAN play a little small ball center in certain situations.
They’re deeper and better situated at center right now than they were at this time last year, in my mind, particularly with the hindsight that they never really viewed Wood as a possible solution there.

If I’m the Mavs right now, I’m MOST focused on dumping McGee so I’m not painted into a corner, either next week or down the road, where I feel I have to stretch waive him to move forward. Whether you want to couch that as avoiding the luxury tax this year, giving yourself more room under the first apron or just becoming more flexible for stuff at the deadline, to me it’s just good business.
If they can kill two birds by exchanging him for a player they like, great. But if I’m running this team I’m at least dumping him to a cap space team for one of those new 2nds, if that’s possible.

I think Powell is perfect as a 3rd/4th center @ 4M/yr. I view him as an injury replacement level player and I suspect he will thrive in his new role.

If Maxi were outgoing in trade, wouldn't that make PJ (mostly a four/small ball center) make a lot more sense in spite of Grant's presence?
Moreover, unless they want to ditch Holmes for the sake of ditching him, that would pretty much solidify the center position across the board. Only problem is, you would still have a glut at the four that would keep OMax off the court - unless one of him, Grant, or Washington could play significant minutes at the three.

SA reportedly is willing to take salary on for picks. Wonder if eventually that is where McGee ends up with only 1 SRP returning.

My biggest question with McGee is why did the Mavs get two second round picks in the Reggie/GWill trade and then later the spurs said they were looking for assets/picks for their remaining space. If it were easy to dump McGee why wouldn’t we just do it in the SA trade and they keep the picks.
Or is there a bigger trade where McGee’s money is needed?

I think Omax can play some 3, sure. I just don’t think you’re going to see many (if any) situations where Luka is the second smallest guy on the court because it would kill you on defense. But maybe when Luka sits and you have Kyrie running things, sure.
How does the money work with THJ/Kleber going to Charlotte for PJ? Is there another piece they could include that would make that work?

Imagine a scenario in which, somehow, we send out THJ, McGee, and Maxi, with the incomings being PJ and Caruso.
Kyrie-Seth-Exum
Caruso-Hardy
Luka-Green-OMax
Grant-PJ-OMax
PJ-Holmes-Lively

I tried THJ+Kleber+McGee for Hayward&PJ but it’s roughy 4M short. Can’t workout anything with CHA unless it’s Maxi+McGee or just THJ for PJ.

I’m with you on this thread, but I don’t think Caruso is even the remotest of possibilities.

If they're serious about being really competitive in the mighty West this year, they can't go into the season without a stout perimeter defender - like Reggie two years ago but way better.

Pretty sure PJ wants a number closer to THJ’s 17.9M

No rumors out there about teams targeting him, although it absolutely makes sense for Charlotte to let him go at that price. His market might be smaller than he wants it to be.

I think the reason whispers of PJ’s availability are out there is because he wants more money than Charlotte (and probably YOU, judging by historical IGT opinion) think he’s worth. I think Hardaway money might be on the low side of what he’s looking for, which is probably why the Mavs got as far as we think they did.
Just speculation though.

Green is that guy, and he’s already here. Plus, how does that logic make Caruso available?

Btw, could it BE more clear that teams aren’t even considering Wood at anything remotely approaching MLE money?
The NBA really doesn’t like him much.

For sure I want salaries as low as they can go, I do not mind taking a gamble on potential though, especially when all the other salaries are lined up so well. My gripe in the past was we were paying bench players starter money which left us no room to give money to guys that would fill holes. Once THJ is gone and assuming they don’t take back like bad salary, our cap sheet looks pretty darn good going forward.
